Stella14
Two of our girlies have each laid a very large double yolk egg in the past week! Does anyone know why this happens?
Henslaved
Don't know if it's true, but I was led to believe that they produce these at the beginning of their egg laying career or at the very end .
Stella14
Well they are at the beginning, so that would work, but I wonder why?
Olly
It's common with young hens coming into lay - roughly speaking, they have produced two eggs very close together instead of 23 hours apart (I think that's the usual timing, but don't quote me!) As the eggs move through the hen's reproductive system and get to the bit where the shell is produced, they're wrapped up in one shell instead of two separate ones. Double-yolkers can be quite large, so it's worth checking that the hen hasn't suffered any damage - other than that, enjoy! I usually save any doubles to give to friends with young children, as they find it very exciting.
