Do you treat for red mite all year around - or only in Spring/Summer months?

Do you spray the coop and dust the hens - how often would you spray/dust them?

 

I check the coop all the time and have never seen anything, I always check at night with a torch to see if I can spot any...none so far - thank goodness.

I wash the cube using poultry shield, and give it a generous sprinkling of buz busters once a month. I sprinkle buz busters in the nesting box weekly and add both buz busters and diatom to their dust baths

All year round here too, we had a minor outbreak during the very cold weather in December so you can never let your guard down!

I do it all year too - wash and spray with Total Mite Kill Concentrate, then dust with Buz Busters powder - both relatively new but excellent goodies.

My friend has just creosoted two of her coops that have been empty for six months and away from all of her other ones. No visible signs of RM but they came swarming out when creosoted

Yes, they will do that - little blighters!

 

I'd spray it with total mite kill concentrate first then creosote.

I keep my guard up all year too, but in winter I only use Red Mite powder. Once it's dry and warm enough, I use Poultry Shield a couple of times a year too.

 

Creosote (if you can still get it) is the product of choice for most wooden poultry house owners, though I've read that the new Creocote works just as well.
