Bluebelle my cream legbar recently has insisted on sleeping outside on a perch i built under a shelter i built for my girls, the rest of the girls march up to bed every night with no problems and bluebelle has been put to bed several times but still prefers to sleep outside whatever the weather, i do not shut the coop up unless there is real bad frost as the girls do not mind the cold as there is enough of them to huddle together.

 

so do i just let bluebell get on with it or do i lock her in the coop and make her stay in there overnight?

I think you need to consider whether predators can get in. I'd always lock them away

no my girls are quite secure in that respect, with high fences and netting. not seen any predators in the 3 years ive had my girls.

 

my sole concern is for bluebelle sleeping outside in the cold.

She'll be fine. One of my bantams has insisted on perching outide through the winter and come to no harm.

I have a similar set up to you, open cube in a secure run. There is usually somebody who chooses to sleep outside on the perches in all but the very coldest of weathers .

A few of my little banties slept in the WIR all through the winter!

 

Would go and put them in the houses but they'd be back out 10 mins later

All of my 6 sleep "outside" in the WIR . Upside is, I don't have to clean the eglu as much .

Yep, I have 3 girls that have slept out on a perch in the WIR through even the worst weather

 

They have all been fine, I too gave up on the popping them in the cube, as Nyssa the ring leader would just pop her head around the door and wait until I started walking back up the garden and then they'd all be out again

 

In the summer, more decide to favour the al fresco sleeping arrangements... But most are happy with the Eglu/Cube
