Meat birds - black meat

Recommended Posts

I breed some Plymouth Rock/Silkie crosses back in October and the cockerals had started to crow so had to go. I had been told that silkie meat is prized in China & Thailand - very expensive, because it is black, not white chicken meat. So we now have a lot a 'prized' black chicken meat to eat.

I have just done a web search on black chicken meat;

So it is better for you that the white stuff.

and from eHow, 'The meat of the silkie is used in Chinese cuisine. In traditional Chinese medicine, silkie meat is used to protect against feebleness and emaciation, increase immunity, and treat diabetes, menstrual cramps and anemia as well as postpartum issues'

:lol::lol: couldn't bring myself to eat it but I reckon you could flog it on ebay! :lol::wink:

You know I have to eat spare cockerals - if I didn't he wouldn't let me hatch - the plus side is of 7 eggs all were fertile and hatched and it looks like just 2 boys and 5 girls.

I've been eyeing up one of my Silkie boys to eat :shock: I normally just dispose of the Silkie boys but we haven't eaten a home grown boy in a long time because I'd deliberately hatched tiny useless chickens so as to have a break from meat boys. I've got four crossbreed boys growing on out in the garden with the rest of the mob and I'd kept the Pekin & Silkie growers in over the winter. I've got two Silkie boys, one I really really love and will be heartbroken to depatch but the other one I'm not so attached to. I was thinking about him this morning and I reckon I could eat him. I'm going to start trying to fatten him up even more, he's quite rangey and athletic looking at the moment.
