CallyChook
Put my first batch of the year in the incy on Friday before going to work. Ebayed most of the eggs so who knows what I will find when I candle in a few days?! 6 silver laced polands, 5 white crested black polands (one was quite soiled so i left it out), six "pot luck" style polands could be frizzled, chamois, black, WCB, or all mixed up and six of my eggs from the garden. My hens only just come into lay though so I am not going to be surprised if not much happens, despite my three lads all being voracious little gents with the girls! I cant tell who is laying which eggs so any combination possible: silver laced poland, gold laced poland and mini white silkie cocks running with 2 gold laced polands, one chamois, one mini white silkie and my blue silkie hen. just cant wait! having some trouble with my temp though which has me worried. I sliced thru the wall of the maino with a stanley knife and whittled away a hole to fit my buttonhole hygro/thermometer in. It says 25degrees. But the traditional alcohol thermometre which was very accurate last year is tellin me we're a good 38/9 degrees and the eggs feel body temp when i touch them - perhaps my digital hasnt wintered well! it's certainly higher than 25 in there. Might take it out, patch up the hole with thick insulation tape (making sure not sticky on the inside!) and stick the button thingie inside to see if it changes its mind Edited March 5, 2011 by Guest

CallyChook
candled last night none of my own eggs done anything - i guess my ladies just arent quite mature enough yet. I've seen the boys tread them all so I'm sure if i try again later in the year then we'll see results! all six pot luck polands are veined and healthy looking 3 white crested with veins, 2 clears only 2/6 silver laced are fertile, I've contacted the seller as he volunteered that if less than 50% fertile he would replace. no reply yet but it was only late last night that I emailed. 11 ickle babies all developing - less than hoped but all precious! xx
Griffin
Good news. Is it just me or have you found Poland chicks to be noisier than any other breed? Mine drive me to drink with their constant screeching! That and the fact it takes forever to sex them and they're always boys has put me off bothering again
CallyChook
I've only hatched out polands and silkies, but out of those two the polands are by far the chattier birds! The br0oder is going in the unused reception room at the other side of the bungalow this year - last time we had it here in the lounge and altho we had the friendliest ever birds because of it, by heck i needed ear plugs. I counted wrong it seems - I went to get rid of the clears yesterday and I do have one of my own eggs still going - it's the tiniest egg so am guessing mini silkie Mina laid it! Teensy tiny embryo inside too compared the the pure breed polands. I've been a bad girl. I've bought another incy and more eggs. Bad bad callychook - I just popped on ebay and before ya know it I was on the phone to hatchitincubators with my visa in hand, and 18 more polands with bids on. Damn you Morehens!!!! Hubby was less than impressed - until I said that I can sell the incy on for almost what I have paid for it, so essentially a free loan. And I am also planning on selling extra pullets and culling the males so we wont be overrun with birds, and the sold birds (depending on hatch rate and girl/boy ratio but i didnt mention that) will pay for the electric i use. I've bought another 6 silver laced, 6 from a mixed flock of blue/splash/goldlace/chamois and 6 cuckoo polands! I never even seen them before so I just had to have them. they're the eggs i'll be most giddy over candling and most disappointed if i manage to ruin the last three days. Sexing polands - with hindsight last time, the boys all seemed to get a ring of feathers on their heads at 1 week whereas the girls were more tufty - but will have to see this time whether that method of sexing works or was just co-incidence

CallyChook
seller of the silver laced eggs that only 2/6 were good has refunded me two thirds of the selling price - very kind gentleman indeed and it has made me feel good about ebay for a change! second incy arrived today, so is now whirring away awaiting royal mail and its eggy deliveries. CallyChook
Last turns tonight for my 12 mixed poland eggies! All 12 have made it from first candling to this point, so fingers crossed. Much excitement! In incie #2 there's 6 silver laced and 3 mixed polands all on day 10 now, and 6 cuckoo polands on day 5! The cuckoo can be moved to incy #1 before hatching. Feels very organised! I just can't wait now.... but Friday night when they're due to hatch, I'm working nightshifts again, and sat and sun and mon. Damn work getting in the way of chickiness again. Here's hoping they hatch a day early
scarlettohara
I missed the first three but the others very obligingly waited until I was home. I am worn out - I don't know how you cope with 2 kids (one a baby !) hatching and working nights Good luck with your eggs

CallyChook
Turned out to be three with splayed legs. Two of the three have pecked off their tape today and are managing quite well and are standing up, abeit with a slightly wider gait than normal, but I've decided to leave them overnight and see how they are when I get in from shift in the morning. One still is taped up. the home-hatched, looks like it's a Count Vlad/Mina offspring
