Contemplating one of the new Omlet WIRs, but we're wondering - what's the best floor surface to have inside? We're contemplating paving slabs topped with a generous layer of wood chippings - a friend is a tree surgeon so we'd have a ready supply.

Are chickens happy with a slab base though? With the amount of scratching and pecking they do we're worried they might wear their beaks down!

My girls WIR is on slabs, and they are happy... I have a covered WIR though so use hemcore, but I'm sure your girls will enjoy scratching in wood chip just as much

Slabs with a good layer of wood chip/Aubiose or similar - but you'll need to protect it from wet as it will turn nasty. I have a WIR with roof, and during the winter the side of the run are also protect by a clear tarp.

Thanks, that's very reassuring! So am now wondering what kind of roof could we put on one of these new Omlet WIRs? I've found something online called 'Shelterflex' which seems to be a cheap but sturdy plastic sheeting - available in a 2m wide roll so could be ideal. Has anyone else come across this, or used it even?

I'd recommend slabs. Easy to clean and helps keep predators out. No problems here with damage to beaks.

I have my WIR on slabs with bare earth in the middle and use Easibed bedding. I don't think it matters which you go for, just choose what suits your situation .

 

I've not heard of Shelterflex but lots of people (including me!) use glass clear tarpaulins to cover their WIRs. Tarpaflex is one supplier.

It'll work well but remember to secure run to the ground or it'll act like a sail in the wind. Perhaps some extra slabs on top of the skirt in places?

I had bare earth initially and now have slabs, I would go for slabs if I was you. The girls seem quite happy too.

I have bare earth, with a good layer of hardwood chips over the top. The girls love having a good old scratch around.
