advice on pecking:(

Recommended Posts

Having problems again :( , daisy my cream legbar is pecking pip my barnebar used ukadex before which did seem to help but wrecked poor pips feathers and now she has just got her new coat perfect and is back to being her self. This always seems to happen when daisy starts laying again or like at the moment when i am worming them, When not being wormed i give them pellets and a bit of mash, greens and fruit daily, i have just started giving them dried mealworms (do i i give a handful to 4 hens?) as i have got to thinking that daisy is peacking the feathers and eating them due to not enougn protein.

what could i give extra to make sure she has enough protein?. We have hung up a cd today for them to peck and have squirted daisy with water when we catch her pecking which has stopped it a little. Really did not want to have to spray pip feathers and wreck them again but will if i have to. Does scarper taint the feathers as much as ukadex?

forgot have stopped giving them extra corn as pip had a impacted crop.

sorry for all the questions

We had quite a bad case of feather pecking a couple of years ago, well it would be better described as a bloodbath really it is a hard habit to break once established.

We used anti-peck bumper bits with some success. The beak kind of grew around them eventually making them less effective and more often than not they fell off.

We did buy some ukadex but I couldn't bring myself to use it. I could smell it before I opened the parcel!

You could try cat food or tuna (not in brine) for extra protein to see if this helps.

I think our bloodbath was more to do with space or lack of it to be precise. Once I built a bigger run all the nastiness petered out, the main culprit died around the same time so it might have been more to do with that though.

I hope this helps.

Kev.
