MummyHen
I need some advice please I had 7 eggs today from my 8 hens ; my blind hen with the funny leg hasn't started to lay yet this year - she's special so am not worrid about her - she has started to crouch again so only time will tell. My problem is with Rita, my Skyline, - she lays a lovely green egg ~5 days each week but its always soft. All the other hens lay regularly, some all the way through the winter, and the shells are fine. What can I do to give Rita a boost to help the egg shell
Henslaved
You could try crushed oyster shell or calcified seaweed? Apart from the softies does she seem healthy?

Henslaved
I give mine crushed oyster shell which I purchase from my poultry feed supplier, which isn't the same as grit. As for calcified seaweed, I have never used it I just read it on this website Problems with Eggs I think maybe Rita just needs some extra calcium which she will get from the crushed oyster shell. I'm sure someone with more expertise will be along to give more advice
Lavenders_Blue
I don't have experience of hens regularly laying soft shelled eggs, but a couple of my hens can sometimes lay a softy 2-3 days in a row. As they're getting older, and they are ex batts, I think they just can't process the calcium in their food so easily. I add Calcivet to their water when I find a softy problem. It seems to help sort out the softies and doesn't affect the hens who are laying hard shelled eggs. There are other products called Zolcal and Davinova which I think are more or less the same thing.
