Just got back from Cape Verde.

Recommended Posts

As our Egypt holiday was cancelled, we quickly booked a week on Santiago, one of the Cape Verde Islands. Got back today after 29 1/2 hours travelling (our flight was cancelled - they only have 2 planes for the island and if one breaks down you have to wait for the next one 16 hours later). We finally made it home, but our luggage didn't. We had to rush to get our transfer flight in Lisbon and I think the luggage didn't catch us up. We have been assured it will be delivered to our door within the next 24 hours. I hope it is, my Kindle charger is in my case!

If you are looking for a holiday where you can mingle with real people living their real lives where tourism hasn't really caught on yet and people seem content with what they have, the children are happy and well behaved and the best toys they have are old tyres, or a huge piece of cardboard and a tennis ball. people go out of their way to smile and chat and to be helpful. They are respectful and considerate to each other, smiling, hugging, kissing and shaking hands with friends and relatives on the street. Well dressed school children walk for miles to get to school and think nothing of hailing a passing car to get them up particularly steep parts of the mountain on the way to school - the 2 children who stopped us were extremely quiet but thanked us for the lift once we had established where they wanted to get out.

Only one group of school children were not quite as polite, when they saw we were tourists, they ran after the car with their hands out shouting "Money, money". When we didn't give them money, they slapped the car and shouted abuse at us. Nice! If this is the sort of holiday you are looking for, then look nor further than Santiago Cape Verde.

It does not have the beautiful beaches that the more touristy Sal and Boa Vista have, but it is fascinating. Tiny little museums give you an insight into Cape Verde as a centre for the slave trade and the markets are full of energy as women trade fruit, veg, corn, fish, meat, live chickens (sadly with their feet tied together), live goats and all and sundry.

Do I sound like a travel agent?

Had a lovely holiday and would highly recommend the island. Have put some pictures on facebook. If anyone is interested PM me and I'll point you in the right direction to see them.
