Help needed on a new chick Rookie mistake or crop problem

Recommended Posts

Hello - I haven't been on forum for a while but we recently had delivery of two point of lay hens from omlet. One is fine the other appears to have an impacted crop (yawning not gurgling and crop still full first thing in the morning). I have started flubenvet in case of gapeworm but as crop is full this morning I'm sure it's impacted crop and not gapeworm. Now do I swap chicken for a new one as I've only had 2 days or persevere to clear crop? I've heard that once they impact they always have a weakness and keep getting it. If this is right should I change her now before i get too attached to her? Also if I change her will she be ok? Or killed? I don't know what to do!!!!

I've had them 2 days but she looked slightly uncomfortable from the start - head retracted a little but eating/drinking fine. My mum had to take delivery of them otherwise I might have refused delivery of her had I been able to be there (delivery turned up early!).

Should I treat her myself with warm olive oil? Is it normal that she still wants to eat/drink?

Maybe I have panicked a little early - how empty should their crops be in the morning because I have just felt it now and it's easily four times as big as it was this morning (it was the size of a golf ball this morning now nearly a tennis ball). So if it is back to golf ball tomorrow is that normal? Or should it be completely empty? She is eating/drinking/pooing but does have a slight drooping neck posture. I an worming here as a precaution as well but she actually laid today 2 days after I got her! Am I worrying unnecessarily?

What a relief! The crop is empty this morning!!! I'm going to continue the double dose of flubenvet to make sure the yawning isn't due to gapeworm and hope that the posture every now and then is nothing to worry about. Thanks for all of your help and advice everyone.
