KeymerKim
Bad news about my pond fish - although we had built a pond cover to keep my fish safe, we had to leave a gap for our water plants to come thru! I didn't realise how bendy herons were until I saw our local bird in the gap, craning its neck around to eat my fish!!!! I had just been given 9 beautiful big fish - two of whom immediately laid eggs in the weed - and I think the heron has made off with 6 of them!! I can only see 3 left, but there may be more hiding in the weed - fingers crossed! I'll post another question about my chickens and eglu - not with me yet (impatient is not the word), but had to get my sadness down in the forum about that horrid Heron. I love all animals, but some of them really push their luck. KeymerKim
xScrunchee
Don't they just?? We only have a small pond but I have lost fish to herons in the past. Also lost some to cats and even foxes!! Like you-I love animals but some animals are easier to love than others, like chickens for example!!
Richard
We have a heron that visits our pond in the mornings. When we moved into the house 2 years ago there were half a dozen or more fish. Now there are none. I'm even more worried about the amphibians; we have a lot of frogs and newts - I've even seen a great crested newt, which I was really excited about. I know herons will eat anything so I'm really quite worried. I couldn't shoot the heron, although several people have suggested it as a solution. I've thought about putting up a plastic artificial heron - but they look so naff! So at the moment I'm just living with it!
xScrunchee
I ended up making a pond cover to protect my fish, frogs etc. Just a simple wooden frame covered with wire. It works well and when I want to sit by the pond to watch the fish I just prop the cover up with a length of wood.
