Mrs Webmuppet
As most of you by now will know from the other thread LMW managed to get a place at a private school. It's a rather good boarding school ( it is her choice of school- she was quite determined from the first time she looked round that she wanted to go there, the fact that she will be away from home doesn't seem to bother her). Now apart from the obvious fact that I will be skint for evermore, does anyone have any top tips / words of wisdom for me. I have no experience of boarding school myself - apart from having read Harry Potter and the Enid Blyton books I know we will be given a list of what she needs to take to the school, which as far as I can tell will require a day trip to Lakeside shopping centre. LMW tells me she will need a 'tuck box' , does anyone have any recommendations on these things? and what do you put in one ( in the St Clare's books it was ginger beer, fruit cake and sardines ) So words of wisdom required from the lovely Omleteers please. Rhapsody
Mine both went for a while and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tuck box with a combi lock is essential, as is a phone with good reception where the boarding house is, respectable nightwear, a night time drinking water bottle and a mini-album of pics from home. I used to send a package to arrive every Wednesday of random treats, magazines, and bits and bobs.
Old Speckled Hen
Where is she going? You must tell us. She must be so excited. My daughter visited her friend at Wycombe Abbey where they were allowed to, nay, encouraged, to keep their own ponies. Being a grammar school girl I didn't know such paces existed
Mrs Webmuppet
It's the Royal Hospital School . The facilties are absolutely mind boggling. She is a keen dinghy sailor too so it will be perfect for her. The school sails at the same reservoir as we do so she already knows the sailing instructors! She is really excited, she has worked really hard to pass the exam - when I went to parents evening at her current school her teacher said that LMW had obviously been putting in extra hours at home because her maths marks suddenly improved. The school sails at the same reservoir as we do so she already knows the sailing instructors!
Old Speckled Hen
It looks great, lucky girl.....well I say that but you know what I mean, she deserves it. I'm no sailor....swim badly, but my DD is a racing instructor,( sailed with Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb at Queen Mary reservoir), when she's.... ahem....resting. Do we look out for olympic success in years to come?

Chook n Boo Mum
Mrs WM, you will find it harder than she will for the first few weeks/months....I know I did ........DS is in his 3rd year as a boarder (yr9) & DD will start at her boarding school in September.........both my babies will be away .........for the first month DS rang several times a day..when he stopped ringing due to being too busy, I was distraught, but glad that he'd settled..the school will keep them entertained from dawn til dusk..it exhausts them & keep the chances of mischief-making to a minimum You will be amazed at how many people will ask why you are sending your child away as though what you are doing is a bad thing............it isn't , the schools they are and will be attending are the best schools in our considered opinions for our children.......the benefits of having a child rise at a reasonable hour, get breakfast & go into classes far outweighs the nightmare of dragging a sleeping child from his/her bed in order to have a 45-60 min bus journey to a "local" private secondary.......they also do all their prep & clubs & bed at a reasonable hour at the end of the day & still spend time with their friends which would not be possible where we live. I agree with having a lockable box for her tuck.......I send DS with cereal bars, homemade cake, maybe some bread or crumpets as they are allowed to make toast in their common room, a few small chocolate bars, cartons of juice, apples, grapes.............allsorts really, but I do try not to just put junk in .........if he eats it all on Monday, he has nothing fo rthe rest of the week, he soon learnt He also has a jar of marmite, chocolate spread & a tub of nesquik or similar. And name absolutely everything..the amount of uniform which goes walkabout is amazing Definitely find out from the school which is the best provider for the mobile....and I would suggest a cheap & cheerful one is better than all singing & dancing, just in case it goes missing We are still on PAYG but considering a contract............ My DD will be going in September, please feel free to pm me, we can weep together
