chestnutmare
... I am not planning on getting any more just yet but wondered:- Can they be kept happily with hybrids or better separate? Are there breeds that generally lay well? What breeds are the friendliest/docile? OH has said 'no' to anymore - I think the cost of another Eglu is worrying him. Purplemaniacs
I am thinking of getting some bantams. I don't think it is a good idea to mix bantams with full size hybrids although I think there are some omleteers who have done it successfully. mollyripkim
Would be really I interested as well. Just ordered cube for my silkies and would like a couple more, can use the Go for intros before selling it. What breeds do you all think would go well with silkies, I really like pekins and bantam orpingtons but haven't seen either in the flesh so not sure if they would bee too big, especially the orpington? What do you all think?
Space Chick
I have hybrids and bantams living in harmony as you have seen yourself
chestnutmare
I have hybrids and bantams living in harmony as you have seen yourself Yes, but you have a large WIR. Will there be any difference in an Eglu run/less space? *considers extension run*
chicken bark
Personally (as someone who has LF and has Pekin eggs in the incubator) I'd keep bantams in a separate house to the big girls - but then you can get big bantams so maybe they'd be okay. I'd have no worries letting them free range together.
chestnutmare
Thanks, what about eggs? Any good laying bantams? Pekins look beautiful...
Space Chick
Some bantams lay better than others... Pekins and Silkies are cute as anything, but will go broody... This is why I keep a mix in my flock, so I get eggs from the hybrids If you are considering, you will have to get a run extension, and will need temporary accommodation whilst intros are going on.... A rabbit hutch would be perfect for that.
fluffy chick
Having tried I wouldn't recommend it unless you have heaps of space. I have silikes and a pekin and would love another pekin or 3 they do go broody like the silkies but they get over it and are very sweet (and cocky) they lay 3 ish wee eggs a week. My other option is banty wyandottes, vvverrrrrrrry cute!
chestnutmare
Having tried I wouldn't recommend it unless you have heaps of space. Do you mean mixing chickens or getting more chickens? Seems lots of pure breeds come in the form of an egg... probably not best suited to me yet.
Christian
My neighbour has 3 Pekin Bantams and they lay 2-3 eggs a day all year! She has had them 2 years and apart from moulting, they all lay really well. AND she still has a lawn!

Okay, where do I get myself some?...
Tweety
Have a look at the Wernlas Collection in Shropshire. I have had beautiful bantams from them - a Buff Rock, a Speckled Sussex and some Sebrights. They also have Pekins, including Cuckoos. Pekins do quite well on little space but you see their characters when you give them room to move (and chase you for treats)
Ewsee
Hi I thought that I would just let you know, my pekin bantam at first did not really get along with my hybrids, but they are quite close now, even though at the moment she is getting pecked on. From my experience I found pekin bantams are very calm, they make good garden birds, in fact she is in the garden now and she is not even digging the boarders. Also they are very cute! And are great for children and also they like being cuddled. Hope this helps....
chestnutmare
Thanks for that, three hours away from me though. I don't know if I misunderstood a section on the website but I think they deliver....
chestnutmare
FC you are making them more appealing to me. I saw a video of pekins chasing some mealworms and they look super cute! Ewsee that has helped thank you. They sound really suited to me. The Wernlas Collection seem to have bantams but it'll be 3hrs each way for me to get to Shropshire.
