What breed are these boys

Recommended Posts

We took on some rescue hens a while back and they have settled in nicely. I was on a course recently where there were some 2 day old chicks. I found out these were the boys, and was able to offer 3 of them a home. Well it was meant to be 2 but the guy said I might lose one as they are so young. Anyhow they are rudely healthy but I have no idea what breed they are...can anyone give me a clue? I think one must be a bantam as he is half the size of the others...

Pics to follow...

Thanks. Aren't they handsome?! I just wish I knew what they were...not that it really makes a difference, just new to the whole thing and loving it. They are currently living in a dog crate in my kitchen until I work out who goes where with the ladies...and they are big enough. I reckon they hatched out roundabout 23 Mar.

Ginger is the biggest, and the pseudo momma...Midi is the cute one with the deep brown eyes and speckles, and Micro chick is, well, he is the tiny one!

I was told they were boys, as checked by some chap up North who the chicken farm uses each year to sex the hatchlings. Apparently he does them at 1 day old, and has yet to be wrong. I don't have a clue to be honest. I would say Ginger and Midi defo are males, but Mini is harder to guage, but maybe that is because he is a shorty!

Ginger is starting to look like the hens we rescued, same colour. Midi has a bigger comb growing, though he is slightly smaller. Micro has only just started pushing out some tail feathers. I got them at 2 days old, so that would make them about 3 weeks old now.

Boys have been having a great time. Let them out for some sunshine yesterday and they spent hours sunbathing. Found some worms for them to have a play with. They are hilarious to watch. They have been having mini play fights, and then just all pile in together and go to sleep. The smallest one likes to be in the middle and it seems Ginger is the bird to be next to...

They should be about 4 weeks I reckon. Both Midi and Ginger have little combs and Ginger is also growing some red jowly bits (sorry no idea what they are called!) Micro is still about half the size of the other two. The other thing I noted to be different between them is that Ging and Micr have yellow legs, while Midi seems to have milk bottle white legs (very much like mine!).

They keep getting cuter :) It must be a joy to watch them grow up.

Midi's markings look just like my cuckoo maran hen, Mildred, so I'd guess (s)he's one too.

Pictures of Mildred (hopefully):

Male marans are supposed to be lighter than the females, if that helps with sexing.

I hope I helped :D

Thanks! They are hilarious to watch, they go everywhere together and if one gets separated there is a heck of a racket until they are all back together. They sleep in a huddle. Micro in the middle. Ginger is the softest of the lot very placid boy, Midi has some attitude but will run away from trouble whereas Micro will front up to anything!

They all get some me time of an evening when they all decide to roost on my arm, all battling to have the top spot, where they then make creaky noises and poop!

They have yet to meet the girls proper, but have been spending time in the big girls run. I bring them in at night. They still seem so small next to the big hens!

Micro is a silver laced Wyandotte - possibly a bantam

The other two look like hybrids, one a Speckaldy and the other a Warren

Redwing if the red one is a warren then is it a boy! I assumed that Rhode island red X light Sussex hybrids the girls are red/gold and the boys white/silver

Thats a blooming good point - true Warrens are like that, pehaps this one doesnt have the same make-up..

Having said that I dont think they are all boys for sure

Without knowing more of the source information I dont think we are likely to know until they are a bit bigger

Ooh what else could/should I be looking for? They all have little bumps coming on the back of their legs- would these be the spurs?

All I know is that they were taken at a day old to a bloke that sexes chicks up north, and I got them from a chap in the midlands. I have some pics of them at 3-4 days old if that might help??

Hmm, just noticed yesterday that Ginger is not the same colour as the rescue hens (hybrids). He is a much deeper darker colour and now has bits of black showing through in tail and over shoulders. Will try and get a new pic of the boys today...sun is out so should be easier.
