Unsecure chicken perches

Hi everyone, this morning after recieving the omlet netting I purchased, I spent two and a half hour errecting it around my eglu. I then released my three chicken into it. Within 2 minutes of them being in there Jennifer hen flew over the top of it. She didnt have anything to stand on to aid her flight. Since then all three of them have managed to fly over the top. They are only 20 weeks old and I am not sure what to do! Is having their wings clipped the answer. How do I arrange to get this done. Do i need to take them to the vets? I dont really want to have their wings clipped. jennifer Clarissa Nigella

When they moult you can let them grow again and by then they seem to forget (mostly) how to fly or put on so much weight they can't

I had the same problem, even after I clipped their wings...

I've only had one actually manage to fly over the net in the early days...these days they accidentally escape underneath it while digging and foraging, but so far I have spotted them in time and shooed them back under!

Mine can fly out too !!

 

I must clip mine I think, but having said that they don't do it often. One has escaped twice & I've not seen her do it. But she doesn't go far when she's over !

 

My other girl only jumps up when she sees me coming with food. She can jump onto the top of it & balance.

 

I've noticed that the net does sag abit in between posts, so I've run some taut string across the poles & tied the saggy bits up.

Oh no, I just ordered that netting. I wanted to section off parts of the garden to try to get grass to grow back but I suspect that the grass seeds may be a bit of a temptation and the netting will be trampled or flown over. Oh well, ill give it a try.

We have the Omlet netting and our two, also quite young have never escaped. They have clipped wings. We do peg the bottom down carefully. We have been very pleased with the netting.

Hi everyone we have clipped all three of them and since then they have not flown over. I am really pleased with the netting and have found it useful to section off my new veg patch when i let them out into main garden.

In my experience you have to clip wings and make sure the netting is taught, by using guy ropes and pegging down gaps at the bottom, in order for it to be successful at keeping the hens in. If they can find a way to escape, they will!

Most of my naughty hens can fly over the Omlet netting, even when their wings were clipped, so Ii now have some Knowles nets above the Omlet netting to a height of about 6ft!!
