Neck pain - any ideas to get rid?

Recommended Posts

I've no ideas what ive done to my neck/shoulder but it really hurts& it's not getting better (or worse thankfully). I've been for a back massage, had lots of lavender baths and am sleeping flat with one pillow. It's starting to annoy me now as it's been more than a week. I have not been letting it stop me doing DIY, chicken cleaning etc, but does anyone have ideas what I can do to help it go away. I have resorted to taking ibuprofen!

Thanks

I did 'something' to mine a year or so ago. It was so unbearably painful that I had to hold onto my head to lay my head on to the pillow at night,as my neck couldn't support it.

It was awful - couldn't drive or anything,or even be in a car because of the jarring.

I got some strong anti inflammatory pills & mega pain killers in the end, from the Doctor :?

I go to a Chiropractor a few times a year as I get problems sometimes from an accident I had years ago, I always find that an ice pack helps as it reduces inflammation whereas heat can actually make it worse, I can't take ibruprofen :(

Sometimes laying on the bed with my head hanging off the end of the mattress can help, I put my feet near the pillow and my shoulders at the edge of the mattress, I think that the mild traction helps. Perhaps if there's no improvement in a few days it might be worth seeing a professional therapist, I got nowhere with my GP as he just wanted to treat the symptoms not the cause

I hope that you feel better soon :)

I'd really recommend seeing a chiropractor. 4 weeks ago I woke up with a stiff neck and then 2 days later was in agony as everything went into spasm. I saw my doctor and was on tranquilisers and strong painkillers for a week before seeing a chiro as a last resort. I am fortunate as my healthcare insurance covers this, but I am now seeing the chiro twice a week and am now seeing some improvements.

If you don't want to go down the chiro route, definitely use ice not heat and it should make a difference.

A couple of weeks after my big neck thing,I got some pain again, but couldn't get any prescribed meds,so I got a strong over the counter anti inflammatory, which also worked paired with co codamol, which is paracetamol and coedine.

Will look up name of anti inflammatory when I get home.....

Thanks so much everyone for the ideas. I took 2 ibuprofen this morning & they lasted well into the afternoon, which was amazing. I will go to the pharmacy tomorrow & pick up some anti inflammatories& see what they say. I'll try the home remedies but will start looking for the chiropractor incase it's not gone by next week.

I had an awful problem with my neck a couple of years ago. It made me feel sick all the time, and I could only get any relief from it when I laid down so it wasn't supporting the weight of my head. I tried physio. The doctor only recommended pain killers and valium (I don't do drugs even prescription ones if I can avoid it!!) In the end the only thing that fixed it for me was a trip to the Chiropracter. He took one look and said I'd managed to interlock two of the verterbrae in my neck, a few loud clicks later he sent me home, and within a couple of hours I realised the pain was going and it really was like a miracle. I have always been wary of chiropracters and the like, but desperation drove me to visiting him and I'm so glad I did.

Hope you feel better soonxxxx

Manipulation definitely helps, I had a course of physio when my neck and shoulder siezed up a couple of years ago, and the physio warned me to make sure that I regularly moved and stretched my head side to side round and round and backwards and forwards. I have kept it at bay since and always sleep with just one ortho pillow.
