They are only moulded plastic I could buy quite a large moulded plastic shed for that price and being on disability benefit the eglu is well out of my price range and I really dont want a wooden hut. There is so much more to them than 'just moulded plastic' - they are beautifully designed & made to last a lifetime. They are also designed specifically with hen keeping in mind,& therefore lots of thought has gone into the build & design of them,unlike a plastic shed which is built to be...well,a shed! Also for the price you get a lot of features - fox resistance,good temperature control,feeders & drinkers,ease of cleaning etc. If it was not for Eglus & Cubes I can honestly say I would not keep hens. I agree, but can add if they didn't come in purple I would never have agreed when OH said about chickens........ now who does most of the looking after I can't complain he did build a lovely WIR and then an extension I think eglus and cubes are well worth the money. I prefer the eglu a beautiful piece of design I think. But that does not help if you can not afford the price. Look on ebay sometimes you can get a bargain, or in the for sale area here, good luck. doctors girls Posted April 25, 2011 Share Posted April 25, 2011 yes they are expensive but i agree with the others look on e-bay i was prepared to pay about £200 for a new wooden coop and then looked at the pros and cons and they were no cons with the eglu apart from the price so went on e-bay and looked for someone who was selling one local as i live in leeds and was prepared to drive no more than one and a half hours to pick one up kept my eye on one in wetherby placed one bid and got at a bargain price i thought £275 for the full outfit well pleased and so are the chooks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jools Posted April 25, 2011 Share Posted April 25, 2011 I wouldn't say that they are expensive when you compare them to the properly made wooden coops such as Forsham and Flytes of Fancy etc. Now if you're looking at the flimsy imported rubbish on the internet, then the best quality housing does look pricey, but remember "buy cheap, buy twice". This all increases the price. 5, If they were made in China or the like the amount made would not be worth the shipping costs. 6, You only have to look at Dyson once it went abroad the price came down a little but so did the quality. Clearly the raw material (plastic) costs next to nothing but the machinery, moulds, staff, designers aren't so cheap. My was a real investment but I'd wanted one for years. I would still keep chickens in a wooden coop (still do actually) but I won't be getting any more until I can afford another or maybe a ooo decisions! Bits kept falling off. You will love your Eglu if you get one. The resale is also very good so if it is not for you you can always sell it later for nearly as much as you paid.
