Just wondered if anyone else had watched this 4pt series on BBC2 which finished last night and what they thought about it

I watched it - thought it was excellent, albeit a little disturbing

I have watched a couple of episodes on iplayer - a disturbing psycho-sexual drama, but brilliantly filmed.

Not seen it, but I just finished reading the book last night. A great read, if a bit eye-opening at times. I can't imagine how they'd have filmed some of the scenes in the book, wish I had watched it now.

I did enjoy it, but couldn't really work out the ending

 

Where did Sugar take Sophie and where did Agnes really go, didn't seem to find out or maybe we are just supposed to leave it to our imagination

I didn't realise this had been on TV! I've just downloaded the book as it is in the Kindle sale. Will read the book then try and get a copy of the programme

I never very good at deciding on what happened - I surpose it up to your own imagination and also its was left open.

May be the book gives a better insight.

I like to think that Sugar and Sophie tried to find Agnes - what do others think?

I'm with you MummyHen I was hoping that a happy & healthy Agnes would turn up but knew that a happy ending wasn't on the cards for such a dark drama. Although I suppose it was a happy ending in a way that Agnes was truly free as everyone else believed her to be dead.

Gosh, I really thought Agnes WAS dead - but of course it couldn't have been her body as she cut her hair when she left!

 

Perhaps there will be a sequel then.

Yes really enjoyed it although quite depessing at times. Not the good old days unless you had money. Yesterday someone told me there was a sequel book. Over 900 pages apparently but I don't know how he knew this.Nice to watch some good quality telly along with Lewis and previously Morse,oh and more Spooks please.

The book leaves it very open - I have been thinking about it today, which is a sign of a good book - the characters really live on in my mind! I don't think they went to find Agnes, I think they're on a different journey.

I found it gripping and disturbing. He was such a vile character! I liked to think they were going to find Agnes (somehow).

 

I was amazed to see the lavender field which is next to my house. Totally missed that going on! Would be interested to read the book and the sequel if there is one.

All four episodes are still available on iplayer; I don't normally watch TV but a friend tipped me off to this one.

Well, I ordered and have received and read "The Apple", which is a book of Crimson Petal stories.

 

As already stated, it isn't a sequel, it's a series of unrelated vignettes. Each story is self contained, and none of them provides proper closure to the stories of the any of the characters. They aren't meant to. Michael Faber has a long prologue which explains that he has no intention of providing the answers about what happened to Agnes, Sugar, William, etc.

 

I haven't read anything else by Michael Faber, so I can't compare the writing style.

It includes:

2 tales involving Sugar, before she met William

a story about Clara, the maid at William's house

a story involving William, some years in the future

a story involving Sophie set many years in the future which, as a sidepiece reveals a little of what happened to her after they left home

a couple of other stories involving other characters

 

There was nothing in there about Agnes.

 

It was an easy read, and I'm glad I read it.
