Heidi-Hi
Hi all, I would like to give my new white Orpington a bath, as she is a bit grubby on her back and chest. She also have a grubby bottom. There is no lice, but I think it might be a permanent problem as she is so fluffy around her bottom, there is no way the poo will drop clear of her feathers. My questions are: 1. Will she need re-introducing to the others because she will smell 'funny'? 2. How do I go about it without distressing her too much? Thanks! Plum
I do mine in kitchen in a sink of warm water and find they calm down even a flighty one. Rinse her well and dry with your hairdryer carefully and I've never had a problem with the others noticing anything. Just use washing up liquid but if you were to use something a bit more posh she might smell more aromatic
Heidi-Hi
Thanks Plum, I'm a bit apprehensive, as she is such a big chicken. Mind you, by the time she is wet, she will probably be the same size as the rest of them! Like a big soft duvet she is, bless her. I am so chuffed. I put them all back in the WIR tonight for the first time, after todays free ranging went without any trouble. I checked just before dark and the two new ones were the only ones out, and I thought I might have to pop them in after dark, but bless them, I just went to do it, and they have put themselves to bed with the others, all tucked up together. I love my chickens...
chicken bark
I have the same problem with my fluffy girls. I went at their rear end with a pair of scissors the other day. They didn't bat an eyelid at me snipping away at them. Not the easiest to do on your own as I had to tuck their tails under my chin to see what I was doing. Only bathed one so far and she was well behaved. Used washing up liquid, dried her with a hairdryer and then put her back in the run no problems. madchickenlady
Mine love baths If it's very warm, I bath early and let them dry off in the sun. But otherwise I use the hairdryer and they adore it. They usually fall asleep
