TheChookKeeper
Question is in the subject really - does Barrier Louse Powder terminate louse eggs, as well as adult lice? I usually leave it later in spring to "dust" my chooks, but did it yesterday, and it was gross - there were a few adults running around on all of them - but most had a LOT of eggs around their bums. I've powdered them all to within an inch of their lives - but don't know if it will kill the eggs, or just the adults? I see Barrier (and others) make a spray too - is this easier to apply than the powder? I've been using the powder (both Louse and Red Mite powders) for years, and have no particular problem with them - but am always looking for a way to make my life easier!!! Thanks awfully! Lavenders_Blue
Barrier Louse Powder doesn't kill anything - lice or their eggs. It is a repellent. If your chooks are infested, you need to use something containing permethrin to kill the lice. The easiest and most popular is Johnson's Anti Mite Spray. Spray each chook twice - once each a week apart - making sure you part the feathers and spray down to the skin where the lice are living. The second spray a week later is to catch any eggs that have hatched. There is a 48 hour egg withdrawal period with this product.
TheChookKeeper
Oh goodness! I didn't realise that! I will get myself some spray at once! Before the little blighters have a chance to lay any more eggs! Thank you!
The Dogmother
Best treat the housing too as lice can hang around in it and hop onto other birds. I use Buz Busters powder for this.
