Eglu Cube, auto door, walk in run for sale South West London

I was just browsing through the Omlet Shop to look at the Eglu. But I don't know which one to get, and was looking for some reccomendations.

 

Here's my situation:

The Eglu will be used for accomadating 4 chickens, they are chicks at the moment.

It will more than likely be in a walk in run.

I'd recommend a lilac eglu cube.

Mine really brightens up the garden, especially in the winter and it is dead easy to clean.

I also like the fact it is higher up and so doesn't hurt my back.

If you really aren't going to get any more than 4, I'd go for an Eglu and put it on a table. If you want to expand, you can add another underneath. ( see astw's set up)

 

However, if you think you'll want many, many more, go for a cube.

I agree - a Classic* will be fine for four, but if you think you might expand - go for a Cube.

 

Will you have it inside, or outside but joined onto, the run? If you have an Eglu Classic inside the run, then you'll probably want to raise it on a table of some sort so you don't lose the floor space. Bear in mind also that a Classic can be dismantled and carried out of the run for cleaning fairly easily - it goes through a normal door space. The Cube will probably mostly have to be cleaned in situ although of course you can take the moveable parts out. All things to consider.

 

* An Eglu Go might be fine as well, but I have never had one so can't say!

my word of advice is to do with run space. Unless you are able and willing to free range your chickens full time then you should provide 1 sq m of internal floor space for each hen, (DEFRA guidelines for free-range hens). This could of course be an extended run or WIR attached to a classic/go/cube or a WIR with the housing inside. In my view the advertising often focuses on the house size and neglects to make run space centre stage where it should be particularly as these houses main target market are small, town gardens with limited free ranging .

 

In terms of eglus I have only experience of the classic which I like very much because I find it very practical, simple and aesthetically pleasing. I am in the process of connecting 2 classic and run combinations together to form one 7m long, low level run which will be static, generally protected from rain and with custom made flaps to enable access throughout the run. If we had a bigger garden and budget I would probably go for a very large WIR with the classics inside.

No doubt about it - go for the cub from day one. Prepare for "Morehens disease" and you'll have space to house then

I would agree with Patricia - if you think you might want more chickens in the future, go for a Cube, but if you only want 4 then choose the Eglu. I have a classic and a go, and prefer the classic just because it feels much more substantial than the go, and I like having the egg port on the side.

Whatever you get, you won't be disappointed!

I would go for a cube and instead of the cube run, a walk in run straight away. You quickly become addicted and 4 hens soon turned to 9 for us plus a WIR.
