Ammonia smell in coop-first time owner

Hi, I am in the process of obtaining some quotes for a 15x6x6 WIR from Aviarie World, Bay Animal Housing (I think this used to be called CMS??), Homes for Pets and Aviaries 4 U. I would love to receive your reviews on these companies, especially if any of their runs have been particularly bad/good, and in particular about Aviarie World runs as so far they have come back with the most competitive price.

 

One more thing, I plan to put down wood chip on the floor of the WIR and so far the best price on wood chip that I have found is £7.30 per 70l bag with free delivery from www.mjgiddings.co.uk. Is there anyone who gets theirs cheaper and where?!!

Sorry I can't help you with the WIRs, but I got some woodchip for free by ringing round my local tree surgeons. One chap was only too pleased to offload a tipper-truck full for me and didn't want a penny.

One or two others I tried only wanted a few quid for the same amount. You won't get the big, chunky woodchips that you would get from a bag but if you're not paying for them, then who cares? The hens certainly won't!

I've just ordered mine form Bay, & Chris from there has been great; it should arrive next week; that gives me time to put the slabs down.

Hi, I'm trying to source a competitively priced WIR that's sturdy, well made and lasts. I'd love to hear from anyone who's really pleased with their run and the company they purchased it from. I feel like it's a bit of a minefield out there!

my wir in run people were very kindly recommended by a friend, we used West Hagley Avairies. Have absolutely no complaints. Its bloomin brilliant

I'd be waiting an eternity for my other half to build one!! I think we may go for a Bay Animal Housing one...but still researching. It's so hard trying to judge build quality from photos.

Thanks Lavenders Blue for the tip about getting wood chips. I contacted our local tree surgeon and he said I could have some in return for a drink...great! I'd just like to check that, assuming there will be a little bark mixed in, whether this will be ok for the chickens as I know they're not supposed to be on bark, but if it's only a small amount would it be ok?

Aviaries4U don't deliver to Cornwall so Bay was my next happy find; they even deliver to Spain, that's a bit mind boggling isn't it!

I have the Poultry Protection Pen from flytesofancy and have been very pleased with it. It came in sections and I got someone to put it together for me.

I bought my WIR panels from Chris at Bay Animal Housing last year and I have to say it's outstanding value for money. I dare say that if you stood it next to something like a Forsham or Flytes WIR, you would be able to tell the difference but it is less than half the cost (and definitely not half the quality!)

I have just got a new WIR from Aviary World (there is a pic on another thread), it was cheaper and is not as good quality as my chirpy coops WIRs. I only want it to house growers, poorlies or for intros so it is fine but the wood needs staining/protecting and it is not the best quality wood - however the mesh is good and I am pleased with it. If you are on a budget an aviary world coop could easily be bought upto standard by adding a roof and kickboards and spending some time staining or painting it

I got mine from Chris at Bay, been painting it all weekend ready for putting it up. Its excellent quality and Chris is very helpful, nothing is too much trouble. Hope this helps.

Yup, he's moved the pop hole for the cube to a different position for me & put 5% discount back onto my card as I joined the forum on Bay's site. That's £14 I can put towards guttering then!

That sounds like a fair deal to me! I don't think that the small amount of bark would be a problem, certainly the hens have been okay on the wood chip I got from my tree surgeon.
