stoice
Zooplus have a 24hr sale on today and was tempted by a dog cage for potential broody problem solving. linky They have a few sizes. The smallest (and therefore cheapest is 63 x 55 x 61 cm (L x W x H) and costs £21.90. Is this an adequate size cage for a hybrid or should i look into getting the next size up 78 x 55 x 61 cm (L x W x H) which costs £26.90? Thanks for your time. x
poppy ben grace
Hi, i have a similar dog cage that we had for our puppies. Its very handy for poorly hens/ broodies etc. Personally i would go for the biggest size you can afford. ( sorry, not very helpful)!
stoice
Yes, handy for buying new chooks too! It's more a query as to how much room other people have allowed for with their set-ups. I was thinking that the showing cages they have at shows fits a bird in but they look a little cramped to keep a girl in for about the 3days or so that may be needed. I think i may get the medium sized one.
The Dogmother
Just big enough for the hen to move around in, and to accommodate food and water coop cups. See guide here I currently have two thinking about going broody
stoice
Thanks for that Claret. I'd say the medium cage looks about right. Just enough room to do three or four steps in either direction and flap or stretch their wings. In your case - would you put them in a cage each? I'd have thought they'd snuggle up to each other otherwise
The Dogmother
Yes, a cage each or one after t'other. Not together. Have fun!
karlotta
I'm just about to buy a new cage so was so pleased to see your link... but after a bit of research I think they are cheaper on ebay... can get a 30" black plastic coated one for 22.79. stoice
I hadn't checked ebay! Luckily i haven't purchased the cage yet anyway. Will check ebay or maybe gumtree for a second hand one.
Gelbel
Madge has gone broody on me today - it's been building all week. It was a nightmare last summer without a cage but I have not been able to find anything suitable at a reasonable cost today . So I had a brainwave, I've brought one of those big plastic laundry bins - and it is a big one. I've popped it up on a frame of perches in the WIR - it's secured in place with bungies, on it's size, with a couple of shoe rack base things popped inside to give a flat floor for her. The lid is held on with more bungies and the bungies are holding her favourite bunny water bottle in place, with one of the hooks holding very small feeder. She's as happy as Larry. The Dogmother
Just remember that it ought to be able to fit in the run so that she can still be with the other girls.
Lewis
I had to order a dog crate for when Mabel came to visit me, and got a black coated Medium crate (30") for £24.89 (inc Free Express Delivery - and it came in 2 days) off ebay Its great, did the job and is folded up ready for the broodies - although I'll probably use them to hatch over the summer Mine was this one - ebay seller is "peteurope" 'cos I know how annoying it is when someone posts a link and the item has expired! The Dogmother
I've bought crates form them before and they are excellent.
chickenlady
Think I will order one of those off of ebay as well Maybe a dumb question, but do I leave the plastic bottom in or is it better that they are standing directly on the wire ? Thanks
The Dogmother
They need to stand on the wire to get the air circulating, it also helps if the poo drops through. As per my link, I put the tray on the top of the cage with a brick on it as the other girls tend to stand on top of the crate and po on the bird inside
