Minty_76
Hello everyone I am still considering my chicken plans and was thinking about getting a wooden house and run to start off with. The reason being that an eglu is an major expense if for whatever reason if it doesn't work out ie.Too much noise, neighbour problems etc. If all worked out I would upgrade to the Eglu Go I have wanted for ages. Would anyone be able to recommend a house and run for not too much money (I have an area of 4 metres by 1.50 metres to play with. Thanks all. Tweety
Hi, How much are you thinking of spending on your starter home, and how many chickens are you hoping to have? Have you had a look on Preloved or Freecycle for a second- hand house and run? You may be lucky and find one there. There are plenty of wooden houses and runs on eBay too. Alternatively, although the Eglu is a major expense, as you say, it does hold it's value very well and if things didn't work out you could sell it on eBay and get a good proportion of your expenditure back. If you are worried about your neighbours, it might be a good idea to speak to them before you get started. Good luck!
Sam
How about buying a second hand eglu go, and if you don't get on with it, just re-sell it for practically the same amount you bought it for. And if it does work out you're already sorted! Good quality wooden houses are expensive and they depreciate quicker.

Redwing
Thats not a bad idea but get a decent wooden house a) it will have a better resale value (though still steep depreciation) b) if you get a rubbish house it could put you off completely, rusty catches, pokey corners, felt roofs and awkward runs only serve to frustrate! Stedic
I started out with a cheap wooden house when I had my first two girls. I sold it within a fortnight - it was a pain! I had no end of minor problems with it, and it almost led to me getting rid of the girls in despair. I bought a second hand Eglu Classic for about £275 and it was the best thing I ever did as it made having the girls so much more enjoyable. I sold it a year later for £300, so they definately hold their value. My advice would be to get a second hand Eglu if you can afford it - I've recently seen them go for as little as £200 on eBay (rarity though). If it doesn't work out you'd have no problem selling it on for the same money within a week. Not that you will, chicken keeping is addictive! chuckmum6
There are some bargains to be had, I bought my Cube set up for £300 and my Eglu for £200 both from here. Keep looking as a good wooden house isn't much cheaper new, don't be tempted with the cheap new ones that swell up as they are rubbish. I got a Forsham ark second hand very cheaply from eBay, which is a good make. I would go down the Eglu route personally as they do hold there value, go's are coming up second hand too. Minty_76
Thanks all for your advice. I have 2 rabbits in 2 different wooden hutches and the oldest one is falling apart after a few years. Plus I've been looking around and they seem very small run-wise. I have a smallish garden but even so! Might keep looking on ebay or on here. Who knows, I may get lucky and find one on my doorstep for sale in Nottinghamshire (anyone??) !!!
