Well we all survived yesterday... still a long way to go though.

 

It's definitely one of the 2 legbars that the others are going for, the other one seems to be being ignored but is sticking close by her sister so they are both still keeping their distance from the others. I think one of the main problems is that they are lurking in the cube doorway most of the time & every time they try to get down into the run they slip on the ladder (which they haven't quite mastered yet) and end up making a loud grand entrance, wings flapping - which in turn causes the other 3 to immediately start chasing them/pecking.. so they run around the run for a few mins then back up & into the cube...

 

No blood wounds or anything, I suppose its much harder to watch than it actually is

 

Going to be a hot day today.. contemplating letting the 3 bigger ones free range for a little while this afternoon to allow the legbars a little bit of quiet time in the run so that they aren't in the cube all day in the heat.

Are they hybrids? (Heritage Skyline/Columbine) Costwolds or 'true' CLB??

Yep, they're GORGEOUS! They look exactly like my CLB chicks - who are getting more golden and more like my Columbine by the day! Sorry, no help

I'm glad they're all settling down, well done! You do have a lovely set up and lovely girls! I love your bluebelle - always wanted one! It's a fact of chookie life that there has to be a chook at the bottom of the pecking order but your CLBs are small and nimble and will get out of the way quickly enough and then your big girl will get boreed with them.

 

...allow the legbars a little bit of quiet time in the run so that they aren't in the cube all day in the heat.

The cube's double skinned and insulated so it shouldn't get too hot inside. But I know what you mean so, just in case, I've been leaving bowls of water everywhere

Well it's been a week and the girls seem to be tolerating each other a lot better... the 2 smaller legbars still tend to loiter in or around the cube door, but they now snuggle up in the nesting box at night with the Speckledy. The Bluebelle in particular is still a bit rough with them, but every day it does get better.

 

Put a couple of new roosting bars in which I nabbed from an old plastic greenhouse that we had laying around. Cable tied the mesh to the frame & likewise the frame to the run so it's pretty sturdy. Should give them somewhere to sit if they want to have a nosey up the garden

 

 

But best update of all is that we got our FIRST EGG this morning!!!! So exciting!!

Must be Queenie's as it's Speckled Good girl!!!!!!!!!!

Yep... almost bought another run extension already! so thought I'd better go 'Up' instead for now. The 2 legbars have really enjoyed using the new roost to get away from the bigger girls whilst still being able to stay outside. Which will be much better for the poo trays in the cube!

 

Still looking fairly clean. I turn over the Auboise every 3 days or so - that stuff is great though!

My little boy will be the lucky one to eat the first egg... going to make him egg & soldiers for breakfast tomorrow!

Of course, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm pregnant I would be selfish and eat it myself ... nice & runny just how I like 'em! But will have to stick to omelettes & scrambled for now. Something to look forward to post-baby!

Aw, what a lovely first egg! Did you weigh it? I've been weighing all of mine (6 in 6 days so far!) and keeping an egg-tally,complete with pretty bar graphs. I'm such a nerd

 

Our first egg looked a bit like yours which is odd as we don't have a speckledy (gingernut ranger, bluebelle and a miss pepperpot)! But we caught Lucy in the act on Saturday finally, after 4 days of speculation on who was the good girl. So I assume all of them have been hers and the first was just a bit different for some reason. I'm surprised as the has bigger, redder wattles and comb so I was betting on her - opps

No I didn't weigh it too late now... today's egg seems a similar size & colour.

 

I'm only guessing it's Queenie's as she is a) the only hen that ventures into the nesting box, barr the 2 legbars, b) has been crouching for over a week and c) it being very dark speckledy...

 

I'm happy to be wrong though, just need to catch the culprit in the act to know for sure!

Sounds like you have the culprit. I suppose my speckled egg was just a first-egg learning experience

I'm loving your cube set up Zoebunny, and you were instrumental in my OH finally agreeing to a cube and I successfully bid for one on e-bay (apparently I didn't "win" anything according to OH....so all the whooping and cheering was unnecessary ).So thank you....(also thanks to Sha, who so kindly demonstrated her cube to us so long ago, see we were paying attention )

However, with regard to your new mezzanine floor,just a word of caution. I had the dog crate inside my run after the initial introductions between my two girls so that Pansy had somewhere to escape Kipper's bad temper and she loved to get up on there. However, on one occasion, she managed to get her claw caught in the wire as she jumped down, and I found her laying on the floor of the run on her side, with her leg up in the air and her foot still attached to the dog crate..she was very distressed, but thankfully I think I got there quite quickly, and there was no lasting harm done.Because of this personally I would be tempted to put something over the wire so they can't get caught on it..(although of course it could just be Pansy being particularly clumsy or daft!)

Great news about your eBay win! My OH was the same and just didn't understand why I was so excited about 'winning' but the way I see it I've managed to get my entire set-up, girls & food etc for less than the cost of buying a new cube so I'm all for taking a risk and bidding!! So congrats on your bargain!

 

Thanks for the word of caution re: the dog crate. I'll keep an eye on them for a few days and if they struggle getting on and off I'll swap the mesh for something solid. They seem fine for now but that could be because they are still young birds so aren't carrying too much body weight.... not doubt that will change soon enough if I keep spoiling them with treats of corn & mealworms

Yay! Looks like we're in production!

 

Double mystery.. whodunnit/wholaidem stylee they are laying sometime between 6:30 & 7:30 so I've not been able to catch them in the act as that's when I'm getting my son up/breakfast etc.
