hopingforchickens
Well after the last week of will we won't we, we are now definitely getting some chooks! I've been to see my breeder who has advised against my white star idea as she says they can be a bit flighty. So I'm definitely getting an Amberlink and a Copper Star but I need to decide on number 3, it's a choice between a Bluebell, a Sussex Star, a Gold Star, a Speckledy or a Warren. I quite like the idea of them all looking quite different and if possible having different coloured eggs as I think the girls will really like this. So any preferences? I really am spoiled for choice. I like the look of the Speckledy, but will the eggs be too similar to the Amberlink? They will all be socialized together so that shouldn't be a consideration. We can go and pick hem on Friday and she will leg ring them ready for us to pick up early next week! Edited May 27, 2011 by Guest
bostock422
I prefer the warren, as they are very friendly, I have 10 warrens and they're great.
johnandkymberley
Hiya, 1st off i TOTALLY disagree with your breeder, white stars are fantastic, yes they are a little skittish but with love and attention - (which im sure theyll have heaps of) they are a fantastic bird, the best layers of -the eggs are described as looking like perfect china/porcelain and a good quantity too, mine lay a tasty white egg every morning without fail (and lets admit it white eggs are soo special!) and have recently at chicken shows been described as little ballerinas because of there dainty and perfect physique, they are super and i wouldnt be without mine, i would have one over a bluebell, gold star, speckledy or sussex star anyday, second to that i would have a warren, they have a good nature and are a common hen for gardens, xx
jennym
Hi, I got my first three girls on Saturday - a Miss Pepperpot (aka Black Star, I think?), a Warren and a Bluebell. We are working hard to tame them and the Warren is by far the calmest & easiest - she lets me touch/stroke her a little bit. The other two still think I'm going to eat them All of them will eat out of my hand, but the Bluebell is not very gentle and often pecks/pinches my hand - it stings, and I don't think little girls would like it! Not sure if that's a breed trait of course, might just be my girl. That's about all I know, so if you want a fairly easy-going bird then maybe a Warren is the way to go. There's a reason they're so popular, I guess! Good luck with the chooks, I've been reading about your troubles - glad your neighbour came around Jen

teacake
I was going to get a white star but my daughter chose a copper nick instead, who is noisy and bossy so I would have been happy with flighty.... we have a bluebelle who is gorgeous, so much bigger than the rest, and very cuddly! and a speckeldly who lays pretty speckled eggs, although the breeder said they dont always, she is the most beautiful and the most shy.... Chortle Chook
I'd just turn up at your breeders and see which girlies you like the look of and who is friendly and greedy. Saying that I do have a soft spot for bluebelles. They are such a pretty colour and sweet natured too
chestnutmare
My white star is the only one who will happily let me stroke her. She's friendly and often follows me and is the best layer, rarely having a day off. My bluebell is an average type of girl, quite independent but very beautiful. My columbine is quite scatty and nervous but lays beautiful green eggs. I chose these three partly because of the colour of their eggs. I get white, brown and green. They're all good layers but my white star is the best layer. Have you looked at the Newland Poulty website, just to get a look at the breeds? I looked at lots of websites when I was thinking about getting chickens, just to see what hybrids were about.
hopingforchickens
will do that now! I think I've pretty much made up my mind, but am looking forward to picking the actual birds based on their individual behaviour!

I think I've pretty much made up my mind, but am looking forward to picking the actual birds based on their individual behaviour! I went with an open mind (actually went to Newland) but came back with what I'd planned. The bluebell chose us though. She stayed next to us through the cage the whole time. What breeds are you thinking of at the moment? Are these going to be your first hens? When are you getting them? So many questions!

Hi, I'm pretty decided on an Amberlink and a Copper Star, the other options are a Bluebell, a Sussex Star, a Gold Star, a Speckledy or a Warren. Would really like different coloured eggs, but my main priority is a friendly, happy chook. Yes these are my first hens and we are going to look tomorrow, for the 2nd time, with a view to reserving some. My run is coming along nicely and I should be ready to collect at least by next Tuesday.
chestnutmare
I think warrens will be a good bet for temperament and egg laying. I do love my bluebell though, she is lovely. Please post pics when you get your chickens! It's very exciting!

chestnutmare
Yaaaay! I bet you can't wait to get them home. What breeds are they?
hopingforchickens
Cornflake (the cream one) is an Amberlink, Lovely Tallulah (the dark one) is a Copper Star and Henrietta is a Speckledy - she's the one I was undecided on, but she seems really tame already - if that's possible. When I was taking their pictures she just stood still and let me, the others kept trying to run away!

Chortle Chook
How eggciting They are so pretty and I love the name 'Cornflake' for that little girly - so appropriate I'd take that bloke up the street with you to see them and then he is bound to be smitten. Nothing like hatching a few plans for support
