Medwriter
Sometimes, as you worry about worming, softies, peritonitis etc you wonder if this chicken-keeping business is worth the hassle and heartache, but then you get days when you can't stop smiling. After losing Holly, one of my orignal last month I went ahead and got a new and to keep Ivy ( in )company. The new girls arrived over the bank holiday and have settled in well. After reading up everything on intros, Ivy was allowed to FR around their run and they had their first FR on their own on Monday. So yesterday ... I got my first egg - a double-yolker - from Sage Then in the evening, I finally got my new Omlet netting erected around the FR area, and while Sage and Thyme were having their second FR, I decided to let Ivy join them ... and they all played really nicely together No squabbling even when I produced mealworms and sweetcorn as treats! I did have to laugh when Ivy decided to be the nosey neighbour and popped in to have good look around the then helped herself to some of their nice Omlet food (since she 'retired' from laying she has just been getting ordinary layers pellets). But she went back to her own house at bedtime! And this chicken owner went to bed a very happy - and releived - girl.

Surfnirvana
Congratulations on such an easy introduction! Where there are "downs" with our chooks there are so many more "ups"!! We lost our last original last month and 2 weeks before she died we got 4 new chooks to keep her company. She got on with them quite well, but then "fell asleep" in her nest box. We were so sad, but it is really lovely to have some new young hens - I'd almost forgotten how quick they are and so much more active than my other lot who were really rather elderly and slow towards the end. Enjoy!
