Beauty-Box
Well done Jaime! The cube looks so cool in red! I just wish I could afford one
ubereglu
It looks fab Jaime! Am very jealous, as I saw the orange display one and it looked great, plus I won't be getting one! (miffed face!)
Jaime
My chooks moved into their new home today - they seemed a bit confused by the ladder. At about 8.45 I tried to tempt them up the stairs with a lettuce which they love. Evadne the Bluebelle, who is usually the most timid eventually made it and had a few bites of the lettuce and then decided she wanted to be on the ground so fluttered off the steps. I thought the best thing to do was wait until it had gone dark and then try the torch technique... when I just remembered they hadnt been tucked up in bed I went out to see and they had all made it to bed and were all cuddled up in a corner. Clever girls There is loads of room in the cube but I'm not sure that the cube and standard run would be big enough for any more than 4 chooks
Gallina
I gave in too early with my hens and put them to bed manually the first night, but they were all right after that. They do get confused: mine thought that the space under the Cube was their Eglu, and they huddled there muttering, "A bit drafty tonight". But maybe yours realized that red is best (even I am coming round to it: it is very striking -- you should consider planting some Crocosmia "Lucifer" around the run: it would look marvellous and divides easily so you would soon have it all round). Re the size of the run: the standard one that comes with the Cube is quite tiny and I agree with you: it's only suitable for more than four hens if they free-range most of the time. I have one extension and five hens in the Cube, and I don't think I would go above six. (I don't want to buy a second extension, as I hope that we can all start persuading Omlet soon to make another piece with a human-sized hatch that goes between the two existing extensions!) Jill
Interested to see what you have both written and my numbers will go up to 5 when I get my cube. I have opted for the extenstion because I thought the dimensions looked a bit tight in the run. Pleased I have done now as I want to be able to leave them in the run when I am out without worrying about them. The 3 I have got at the moment hate being shut in the eglu run and spend the whole time by the door waiting for it to be opened.
Jaime
"Lucifer" was my fave plant last year and I tried everywhere to buy some. Managed in Autumn to buy one struggling little pot and so far its still struggling. It would be a good idea to plant it just behind the run it would make the fence to my little veg plot dissappear. Guest
Looks really great. I have 'ordered' another five batams. 2 that my OH said I could have - and 3 I wanted - so can't see anything wrong with that! I will have 7 in total then - but as it is big enough for 10 full size chickens, and I also have an Eglu and will soon have another hen house - I might squeeze in a few more Only 15 more sleeps until my cube arrives
Jaime
I'm telling fibs..... Schizostylis coccinea ‘Major’ commonly known as the ‘Kaffir Lily” is what I was trying to find - its very similar. I think it would look good against anyone's new RED Eglu or Cube
Snowy
I love the schizostylis Jaime! I have a lovely magenta one, only one I've been able to find and mine is struggling by the pond Let me know if you find out what it likes!
Gallina
And here's Lucifer: I started off with a small clump, and now I have pots and pots of it. I think it might clash with purple....
Jill
Ooh what lovely pics. That's me off to the garden centre tomorrow then!
Jaime
http://www.farmyardnurseries.co.uk/schizostylis.htm The website says.... To get the best from these extraordinary plants they really need a sunny sheltered site where they will get as much autumn sun as there is to keep them flowering for as long as possible. The plants themselves are quite hardy, but a mulch in the worst of the winter weather is advisable. Schizostylis are a must for all gardens, they can even be found growing as pond plants.
