Unsecure chicken perches

I've had 2 broody pekins in the dog crate before now. I leave broodies in it for 3 days and nights, and so far it has worked. It goes in the WIR and is raised off the ground on bricks.

 

I did the same and it DID work

Okay, I just want to make sure Im understanding al this as I will soon have a large number of pekins so broodyness is an inevitability for me.

 

I have a dog crate, now under what sort of weather conditions will a chook be okay to stay outside at night in this, I have a piece of perspex floating around so can protect them from rain, but what about night temperatures?

I use a wire pet carrier and it works well for my horrors, my grandfather had a wire crate with a wooden frame which he used to suspend under the branches of a shady tree to keep them cool.

I wouldn't personally leave them outside overnight in a cage unless it was somewhere very secure and the weather was forecast to be kind. Do you have a garage or similar you could move the sin bin into overnight?

my WIR will be right outside my patio doors..............would it be ok to bring the crate into the house overnight if need be? Althought the crate could be covered with an omlet shade.................

This is my broody cage. It's a dog crate with a layer of an Ikea shoe rack for her to sit on.

This pic shows Mary the Lt Sussex in situ, but at the moment it's occupied by the RIR, Gilda.

That looks ideal - anything which increases the airflow and stops them from snuggling up all warm is great. BTW, don't feed them corn when they are broody - it will only get them all hot

I've been giving fluffy knickers corn and mealworms as well as layers because she was off her food...... Strict prison food only from now on!
