witzend
Hope this isn't a stupid question.............. There's lots of information about how to try to get rid of broodiness but how do you tell when a chicken has gone from being broody to NOT being broody?? percy049
I suppose they dont want to sit on the nest anymore and resume their egg-laying - I'm still waiting for this to happen!
Egluntyne
They are behaving normally. Out and about, eating and drinking, wanting to be with their pals.
witzend
so............if it's been 'cooped' up in a broody pen for a couple of days, it should start standing up and looking more lively - rather than sitting doing 'nothing' ?
Egluntyne
Correct.
bouldercroft
having just cured my broody Rita I can confirm that the behavior change is huge. she's back to hanging with the girls, running out to free range at the first opportunity (I love to see them all trying to get through the hen hole at once) she's scratching about and sunbathing and is considerably less ASBO about everything eating and drinking and fighting for attention when it comes to treat time *when broody Rita would sit pancaked on the nest - constantly clucking and talking to the imaginary egg *she would squawk at me if I went near *she once tried to peck me when I lifted her off the nest *once evicted from the she would try and get back in - constantly looking for a way in - above, below, behind *when forced to free-range she would sit on the wheelbarrow handles flapping her wings and squawking very loudly *she rarely bathed *wasn't interested in the battle for grapes I'm so glad to have my lovely Rita back to normal again... hormones are seriously crazy things! witzend
can't wait to experience it!!
percy049
can't wait to experience it!! it's cute at first, especially if you take them out of the nest box onto the ground, and place an egg next to them, and watching her roll the eggs underneath her. Apart from that, it does get quite tiresome. It isnt that great, especially having no eggs!
witzend
hoping the dog crate method (other topic) will work!!
