Bev
A friend of mine from work has some ex-battery hens and told me that they seemed to be pecking and feather pulling. I gave her a couple of my bumper bits as I used them a couple of years ago with great success. However apparently her hens have had the ends of their beaks removed and they havent grown since she has had them (not sure if they do re-grow). She has'nt attempted to try the bumper bits yet but has asked, if they do fit, will they still be able to eat etc with the bumper bits on. I know hens normally have no problem eating with them but Im unsure if they would cause a problem on their "trimmed" beaks. Can anyone give advice
abwsco
From personal experience I don't like them, plus exbats have been through enough imo, so I would ask has she tried everything else first, how long has she had them and do they have enough room. Bev
She has 3 ex-bats and her "house" takes 4 hens. The feathers are disappearing from the neck area and the vent area. She has been using the violet spray. She got the hens in Sept last year I believe. I personally never had any success with the "anti pecking spray" and after one of my girls was pecked to death in an afternoon I turned to the bumper bits in desperation and they worked for me but I am keen to pass on any advice you can give. Egluntyne
I use them when necessary, as I feel that the pecked hens have the right to go about unmolested. It could be because the beaks are trimmed that she may be unsuccessful in fitting them, but if all other reasons for the missing feathers, such as moulting, have been dismissed, then I'd say it was worth a shot.
