I am hopefully going to have some chicks by the end of the week (cross fingers) is the Eglu Classic safe for the chicks? I don't want them to get out so i wanted to make sure that they aren't able to. As well it has 3parts to the run and i didn't know if i should make it smaller at first or not? What do i have to do to get it ready for them? I have taken the runs out, will i put shavings on the floor? I can't let my chickens out as i have foxes that take them in the day so they will have to stay in unfortunately

What age are the chicks and how many are you getting? You are right to remove the runs (I think you mean the roosting bars that are inside the eglu). Younger chickens can't cope with these! I line the tray with newspaper and then put shavings or aubiose on top of that.

I am not sure if I have understood what you mean correctly. Do you mean you are going to leave them shut in the eglu during the day or will they have access to the run? I would not shut them in the eglu. When I first had mine, I thought they were quite small and the gaps in the run wire were quite big so I used smaller sized mesh and attached it to the run with garden tags . It was very fiddly and I am not sure whether it was necessary or not but at least it put my mind at rest when I was out

Also, when I first put them in the eglu, I only put together a 2m run until they got a bit bigger.

Hope this helps :D

Sorry i didn't really make myself very clear did i lol. I have a broody sitting on eggs and i am hoping that are going to hatch (due to this weekend coming) I will let them out in the run but they can't free range because of the foxy. When i look at the Eglu run they all look different in size to pull them apart to make the run shorter is there a way i should do it ie are they different in size or do they all fit in with a little bit of bending. I was given the Eglu so don't really know anything about it  Thanks for the help

Try this for information about setting up the eglu:-

Have a look in the 'Hatching and raising chicks' forum. I know nothing about hatching and looking after chicks this age. I think it might be worth asking the question in that section.

Good luck. Don't forget to update with photos

Just for future reference - Eglu Classic's arent' that great for chicks. My cute little babies were born on Sunday (proud Mummy) and i needed to move them as soon as 24hrs was up. Mother hen wanted to sitting the the nesting box all the time and the chicks couldn't get back in after me getting them out to be with the Mummy and if i didn't take them out they wouldnt' have been able to get out of the nesting box to get to the food and water(i wouldnt' have thought so any way). Mother was getting destressed as she didn't know what to do. In the end she squashed herself on the bottom of the eglu and stayed there. I have now moved them closer to the house in a more free moving run and house. Seem a lot happier. In short - I find the nesting box perfect while she was sitting but now she has them its too deep for the chicks.

Block the nestbox with a football or flower pot

Remove the bars and put down bedding on the tray for her to finish her brooding on

Keep the door shut throughout hatch till all of the chick are dry and mobile

Use boarding/lawn edging around the bottom of the run on all sides to stop chick getting out or stuck

Make sure its on fresh ground or fresh bedding as contaminated soil from older chooks isnt good for chicks

I put loads of bedding down on the poo tray (taking the bars out) so its nearly level with the top of the nesting box; then I find they can get from one part of the house to another. For future reference, I let Mums sit on eggs in the nest box but a couple of days before hatch I move the eggs and her to the poo tray part on plenty of aubiose so the eggs hatch there. Inevitably she will eventually migrate back to the nest box, but its always worked fine for me. Right now I have 3 LF orps of 8 weeks still under Mum - there is not really enough room in the box for them all!
