One of my chickens has found the remains of a dead mouse left by the cat on the lawn and my daughter saw her eat it. Shall I throw the next couple of eggs of hers away?

Not pleasant, I agree, but why throw the eggs away? Chickens are omnivores. Don't worry - you won't find whiskers in your egg!!!

The only thing I'd be wary of is if it blocks her crop but as it's remains of what the cat caught I'd say she'd be ok. No reason to ditch the eggs. Bet she was very pleased with herself.

yep, they're really quite partial to meat when you think about it.

 

I wouldn't worry about the mouse vs eggs thing - hens like to eat worms, snails and beetles but we eat the eggs after that

 

It's worse when you see two of them performing a tug-of-war over a frog...

I view chickens as natural 'filters' - pellets, greens, grass, bugs, grit and the occasional mouse or frog go in; out comes lovely compost and beautiful yellow -yolked eggs.

I wouldn't throw the eggs away. I'd just give them away to a neighbour!

Yep. Mine have all eaten mice, frogs, slugs, snails, flies and other assorted insects and the eggs all tasted exactly the same! We also feed them left over s"Ooops, word censored!"s of meat which they LOVE. I wouldn't worry. Just eat the eggs as normal and enjoy.

I can sympathise with your problem! I was digging in my veggie patch andthe chickens were happily scratting at my feet. I suddenly pulled up some old raspberry roots and unearthed a rats nest complete with six small babies. The chickens went wild and grabbed and pulled at these rats! One chicken actually swallowed one whole . The remaining chickens ran around the garden chasing the other chickens which had rats dangling from their beaks!! I had to go inside and have a lie down for a moment - I felt pretty sick!!!

Have to say the same here - my girls are omnivores and have eaten mice I now just think of chickens as extremely efficient composters!
