scarlettohara
I sell a lot of eggs to neighbours, work and have a sign outside the door. I like to sell them in coloured boxes with specially printed labels which I get from ebay. I sell lf eggs for £1.20 1/2 doz and bantams for £1 1/2 doz. At the bottom of the label it says 'please return the box' hardly anybody does I'm thinking of asking for a 50p deposit for the boxes, I could use any old box but the presentation is all part of it for me What does everyone think about the deposit ? Redwing
maybe leave trays of eggs out (covered with another tray) with a sign that says £x with box, £x without box Or just up your prices to cover your costs
witzend
I found this article a while ago - it suggests that you can't size eggs and can't re-use the egg boxes you sell them in........... ??? http://www.poultry.allotment.org.uk/Chicken_a/Chicken_Egg_Excess/selling-eggs.php
scarlettohara
maybe leave trays of eggs out (covered with another tray) with a sign that says £x with box, £x without box Or just up your prices to cover your costs Good idea
Redwing
I think someone on here also gives a box that has the buyers name on, they then return the box for a refill, the boxes are refilled in order of return and the person gets 'their' box back again Any non regulars could maybe pay more as you dont know if you'll see the box again! scarlettohara
Will try that too
Chicken shack
My friends usually bring the boxes back for re-use. I don't sell them though, I give the eggs as a gift. My family eat most of them. If I want to save them for a friend I have to hide them. All these rules drive you mad.
scarlettohara
Just had a newish customer call with no box (she and her sister had a dozen each last week so 4 boxes) I explained about the box situation ie no boxes at the moment (not quite true as keep some back for neighbours/Mum ) and that in future eggs sold with a new box will cost 50p more and she went home and got hers If anyone thinks I am being a bit sad it doesn't bother me whether I sell the eggs or not - they will get used but am fed up forking out for boxes which people then throw away
Space Chick
We nearly run out of boxes, but most people return them.... In fact had a few days leave, returned to 6 empty boxes on my desk
witzend
how about a label on the box asking them to return the same box for a refil but that additional boxes will be charged
scarlettohara
The box does say 'please return' and now the blackboard says more or less what you suggest above
Bramble
I tend to give away most of my eggs. I have a small supply of Omlet boxes which came with my Eglu and I'm afraid i always ask for the box back - boxes are expensive (if not the boxes then the postage certainly makes them pricey) and what's the point of putting a reusable box straight in recycling and giving people a new one? I like the idea of putting people's names on the box so they get their box back each time - I have some "customers" who aren't great at returning boxes, but if their name is on it, at least I could keep better track of them ... I like the sound of your labels though ...
scarlettohara
Just had a nice new customer and his little girl call - quite happy to pay the extra 50p and bring their box back for a refill next week, and they had bantam eggs as well which always pleases me as they are so tasty
stehaggan
The farm where I used to get my feed from sells boxes in bulk. It is sycamore poultry farm. I was sick of not getting boxes back and pets at home and ebay are expensive. http://cheshirechickens.no-ip.co.uk/Barn_Eggs.htm#EggPacks Ive recently been - bought 150 boxes for £9 so works out at 6p a box so i don't mind losing them. He also does larger and smaller quantities. As sometimes i can sell 5 a week to work friends and family etc i thought i might as well stock up! Any that i do get back will get used again or go into compost when tatty! It might be worthwhile seeing if he delivers if anyone wants any? Much cheaper than pets at home which sell for 40p each!! Julia W
http://www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk/pws/ProductDetails.ice?ProductID=1278 I know most of you are talking about the coloured egg boxes but Countrywide sell the ordinary grey boxes. 300 x 6 for £18.99 which works out at 0.0633p each. Can't go wrong. You could always put a nice label on them as most people don't really care what the eggs are packaged in. Just a thought.
