Introductions - question...

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

We've got a cube and 2 of our original chooks at the moment (the lovely Winnie died 2 weeks ago  )

Anyway, we are going to get 2 new chooks, but I'm a bit apprehensive about the introductions - so I want to get it all planned before I get them! I've read http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=25886 which was really useful - thanks. I've created a secure annex run attached to the cube run using bits of Omlet mesh that I had for something else - it's about 1m x 1m floor plan (well it won't be for long) and has the fox proof skirt around it. I've also divided the existing netted free-range area so that the oldies can have one half and the newbies can have the other half, while they can all still look at each other. So during the day is sorted (I think).

So the question is - for nighttime - at the moment I only have a cat box - no spare rabbit hutch or Eglu. Do you think it would be OK to use that in the 'annex' for the newbies to sleep in temporarily? Or could I use the cat box and put it in the cube?

Any thought welcome!!

Thanks

Jill

Hi Jill, As long as your annexe is as secure as the run it should be fine. They'll not get cold this time of year, so a cat box is ok.

I don't know if there would be room for it in the cube. At first you are best keeping them seperate because of possibility of introducing infection so I'd do your first idea and have the catbox in the run but I would shut the door to keep them safe.

Good luck when are they coming? :D

Well - I got them this afternoon - a bluebell and a 'cuckoo' (all speceldy) who came from the same pen at the breeders. They are in their little pen with the catbox and seem quite happy, and the older 2 are a bit indignant at the moment - lots of squawking as if to say "oy this is my patch!"

Daphne (my original Pepperpot) and the cuckoo (no name yet) have been sizing each other up through the bars of the run with the odd peck. It was quite funny to see - they were mirroring each other's actions! They are about the same size.

Bunty (Gingernut) is squawking as well, but the bluebell is just chilled out looking around!
