Are they ever going to lay eggs again?

Recommended Posts

Two of my three hens have not laid eggs for about 8 or 9 weeks now. The did have a moult, but not a major one and it appears that all their feathers have regrown. They free range, they have been wormed, they appear to be a healthy and happy :D Poor old Molly is getting a bit fed up with being the only one laying an egg each day  Any ideas from anyone please?

I see that you say they've been wormed. How much free-range time do they get - it's possible that although they are eating plenty, they are not getting the nutrition needed to produce eggs. Could you keep them in the run for longer, to ensure they fill up on layers pellets, and cut down on any treats?

At 18 months I'd expect them still to be laying, especially at this time of year.

No I didn't use Flubenvet. Will try it. Also will leave them in the run for a bit longer in the morning. Thank you all for replying and for your ideas. I think Henrietta and Matilda have decided that they are living the good life here and don't need to lay eggs - they will still get all the love and attention. Naughty girls!

Following on from last week, Molly has stopped laying now as well! No eggs at all. Today all three have been very lethargic, just hunched up in one spot. Also their combs have a slight purple tinge to them, not the usual bright red. They have been wormed (flubenvet and vermX) and their eglu has been thoroughly cleaned and dusted for mites. All the bedding has been changed. The poor things don't look happy at all. Anyone got any ideas please? I'm worried now! :anxious:

Thanks for replying. Will see how they are tomorrow and then if no better will take them to the vet. I'm also looking after my neighbour's 6 hens while she is on holiday. They are all laying and running around like mad. No sign of any illness, but If mine have got some infection could I pass it on to her hens? :anxious:

Update: Hens back on form - scratching about the garden, nice red combs, back to rude health from the look of things! :D Still no sign of wanting to lay eggs though. Just had a thought - a wood pigeon keeps getting into their WIR, obviously after their food. I've put him out several times, but he keeps coming back. Can't think why, but would this have an effect on their health/egg laying? :?
