darkwoodali
As we went to put the girls to bed last night we discovered Peppa was missing! We live on a farm and the girls tend to free range a fair distance but usually stick together. No feathers were found on an extensive search of the fields or farm but late last night I did hear a fox calling in a nearby wood so we're assuming the worst. I've kept the others shut in their run today and locked in the coop overnight so as to avoid any early morning snooping. One of them seems quite upset and won't leave the nesting box. Question is, how do I break it to our 2yr old that his favourite girl is missing? Hubby wants to get another quick smart but I'm reluctant due to settling in worries. Darn that red haired beast, I know it was probably inevitable at some point but we've not had her a year yet and she had such character. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm sorry to hear that . Perhaps she roosted safely in a tree overnight and hasn't found her way home ?

LuckyChickenLover-
Any news? Did she turn up?
Henslaved
As ANH says, she may have found a safe place to roost for the night, possibly after spotting the fox and following her instincts to get up high. This happened with one of mine last year. We couldn't find her anywhere and there was no scattering of feathers to be found. She found her way back to the hen house when she needed to lay an egg . Hope she turns up soon .
darkwoodali
Unfortunately Peppa never did return home. Sylvia is still sulking but the other two seem a bit better, although they all seem a bit off their food. Hopefully they'll perk up soon. Bit the bullet with my son and told him Peppa wasn't coming home as Mr Fox had taken her. He seemed to accept the truth and replied that if he saw Mr Fox he would throw a shoe at him, shout and gobble him up! Hubby is keen to re-stock our flock but from what I've read it's not a good idea to introduce one lone chicken so it would be 2 minimum I guess. Might wait a little while though, still feeling bad about Peppa.

lindafw
having accepted that Peppa is probably fox food I have to point out that Esmerelda has been awol for nearly 3 weeks...she has been spotted briefly at the feeder before disappearing again twice...we know she has a garden escape route but as yet cannot find where she has holed up... I am hoping she is brooding a clutch and will bring them home!
