Anyone keep Bantam Orpingtons

Recommended Posts

I have a 13 weel old Chcoclolate bantam hen that is getting bullied by the tow pekins she is in with. I'm worried that she is goig to be permanently bullied as I was hoping to put her in with the other hens eventually. Would it be kinder to find her a new home as I Don't want her to spend her life beng bullied although she may pair up with one of the other lower ranking hens in my big run. I've put her in with the 11 week old pekins for now. Any advice

I've had bantam orps and they are quite timid, things should settle down though as chicks are rarely really mean, I'd persist for now and leave her with the Pekins, isolating one of the Pekins for a day or two may be enough to break up the tension in the group but to be honest they will sort things out regardless

They can be timid, and I'm guessing that maybe the pekins have been brought up together whilst she wasn't - so she is a new single girl to their existing pairing? Keep an eye on it all, but I would also keep them together for now, they should sort it out. If not, I'd say she is too young to go in with your older girls so either try taking a pekin out as Redwing suggests and reintroducing it after a few days, and if that doesn't work then maybe get her a young pal to make a 4 if you have room; another orp perhaps. I'd look to rehome as a last resort as I expect she is a pretty little thing :D

They were all hatched together, I had four choc orp eggs but she was the only one that hatched, both the pekin eggs hatched, the eggs were given to me by someone at work. I have just got three more pekin girls who are a couple of weeks younger so hopefully they will break the bond between the two older pekins. Your'e right Daphne she is lovely. :)

I was thinking about getting another Orp but there aren't many orp bantam breeders in my area. Also I have just got three new pekins, I told OH I was only going to get one and came back with two then I went back yesteday and got another one that he doesn't know about yet so I think the orp may have to wait a few weeks unless one just happens to come along.

I got a friend for Daisy today, a Gold Laced Bantam Orp called Darcy. She is the same age as the others so hopefully will be able to stand up to the pekins. It took a three hour round trip to get her, I got lost. I only went to Stockport and back [about 45 miles each way] She is lovely though.
