sjs
We've had our 3 lovely hens for 8 weeks now and 'Feathers' has been under the weather on and off for the last month. She is passing eggs with no shells and the other 2 hens are beginning to peck her all over again like they did when they first got together. Whilst those 2 are thriving Feathers is still half their size and much quieter. I've tried a tonic in the water and alternated this with liquid calcium as they don't eat the grit. We've also got the anti-pecking spray but she goes mad when we spray her and gets distressed. I'm still feeding them on ex-bat crumb and treats later in the day. Feathers can't seem to pass solid poos either. We're just about to give her a bit of a clean. I don't know whether I should seek advice from a vet, can someone please give me the benefit of their experience on this?
Egluntyne
Sounds as if she does need to see a vet if she has been ill on and off for a month. Advice on performing a basic health check Click
majuka
I would agree with Egluntyne and take her to the vets, do you have a chicken friendly / knowledgeable vet near you do you know? Hopefully it is something that can easily be sorted. It may be relevant that the other girls have started picking on her again as hens can sense illness / weakness in each other. Good luck. sjs
Update on poorly Feathers. Thank you both for your replies - I took her to the vet this morning. Mercifully found one on Omlet forum who was only 10 mins away - no mean feat in Surrey! The vet extracted a deformed egg and is seeing her again in 2 days. She looks very unwell but we hope that she will recover. She's back in the run but separated from the other 2 girls. Fingers crossed. majuka
Thanks for the update on Feathers. I'm glad you found a good chicken vet, it makes all of the difference! Poor girl, at least there is a simple explanation for her symptoms though. Everything crossed that she makes a good recovery.
sandyhas3chucks
hmmm a few in Surrey recommened now, also depending on where in Surrey a very good one in Alton Hants Cedar Vet Group a Mr Baxter. Really glad you found them and got her sorted. I have had a lot of these and they often make a good recovery. Please keep us posted. If she is under the weather still see if she can be tempted with some "special food" to help keep her strength up. Horsham also not to far and "Avian"
