phylis is ill any help?

Recommended Posts

Hi, our chicken phylis is under the weather, she is about 2 or 3 not entirly sure.

2 weeks ago i noticed she looked very pale and her bum was really messy, she also was making a funny noise, I gave all the chickens some ACV in their water and she seemed to hve pick up a bit, as she doesnt make a noise any more(it was sort of like a sneeze)

However she still seems ill as she seems very slow, she is still eating and drinking but we know there is something not right with her.

What could it be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Izzy

Oh btw its the only chicken which has got it the rest seem fine

It does sound like it could be worms. Verm-x is a preventative but not 100% as far as I know. It would probably be worth you getting either some Flubenvet or Xeno 450 spot-on (not licenced for chickens but my vet gave some to my hen the other day and she expelled roundworms within 12 hours!) and seeing if that makes a difference to her........either way I would treat the whole flock though to be on the safe side.

oh ok i will have a look, i have always thought that the verm x is 100% effective, as thats what we were recomended by the people who we got our first hens from. And we have never changed, i wish i had known that earlier weve only just brought a new bottle of the stuff and its quite exspensive :(

Also if this would make any difference to anything is that we have had red mite but ive been cleaning the coop out throughly and spraying with poultry shield and the red mite powder we have and the numbers have decreased significantly this month and last time i cleaned them out i only found 3.

So could it be the red mite, however if it was wouldnt all the chickens be affected

I don't think it's a bad idea to keep giving the Verm x regularly, but probably a good idea to use a 'proper' wormer every six months at the very least...... my Vet says every couple of months. Possibly Phylis just has a slightly lower immune system to the others and gets picked on by the red mite more. Whenever I've had a sick hen I've almost always found lice on it even if none of the others show any signs of lice whatsoever ...... it's as if the little critters know just which one to target.

Obviously it could be that something else entirely is wrong with Phylis but worming her won't do any harm and at least you can eliminate that as the cause if she doesn't improve.

Good luck :)

Ok, thankyou for your help, i will try and get my hands on some of that wormer then.

I havent spotted any lice or mites on phylis but i always get the chickens once a month and give them a good covering of both red mite powder and louce powder and that is probably why i never see any of them.

Can i ask where you can get the flubenvet from and can that spot on wormer be brought in a shop or does it have to bee bought from the vets

Either can be got either at your vet or online .... Amazon, Bestpet, 365Vet whichever is cheapest (no prescription is needed).

The Flubenvet (around £15) is licenced for chickens, you mix it with their feed and try to make sure that's all they eat for 7 days, there is no egg-withdrawal.

The Xeno 450 which also kills the mites (around £20 for six treatments) (not licenced) goes on the skin on the back of the neck and egg-withdrawal is recommended for seven days after treatment........as I say, my vet just gave that to my hen (Gretel) on Monday and the effects were pretty amazing but she told me to retreat in seven days to get the ones that hatch in the meantime. I am currently treating all the chickens with Flubenvet anyway just to be on the safe side. The reason the vet came was that a couple of them were showing signs of respiratory problems and Gretel was the worst. She also prescribed anti-biotics for all of them but I honestly believe in Gretel's case it was the worms that were making her so poorly because she wasn't eating or anything (which meant I couldn't get her to eat the Flubenvet treated food) and now is behaving just like a normal chicken!
