Birthday Girls

Recommended Posts

I don't usually find much to celebrate in getting another year older, but when your husband gets you a present like this, who am I to complain?

Both Splash Orpingtons, one light, one dark, now aged about 17 weeks:

Emily:

Madeleine:

They're both really sweet and very friendly - new flock definitely turning into an Orp dominated one (still want another Buff, our local chap should have some ready at the end of the month  )

Other part of birthday pressie was the walk-in run husband is currently constructing to try to avoid any further fox problems (definitely chicken alcatraz!) - girls were allowed to FR yesterday whilst he was digging in some more of the foundations to rummage for worms and other interesting critters:

Hope (now filling out to a proper Orpington shape):

The Orp girls, Emily, Madeleine & Hope, trying to help daddy:

Everyone together (I'm still convinced Harriet is part hawk ):

They're all LF, just young - Emily & Madeleine about 17 weeks, not quite sure on Hope (husband brought her home, just saying 'about POL', about 6 weeks ago, so probably about 24 weeks or so.

My old Buff, Matilda, was a huge bird, and so was the cockerel we accidentally had before her (sold as a hen) - the previous gold-laced we had, Florence, was never quite her size, but was still a substantial bird  Hope is definitely filling out now into the proper, round, Orp shape - the two youngsters are definitely still a bit gangly :D

Have you ever had egg issues with your buffs? I have a buff hen and cock...Baggins looks after all the ladies and is quiet a boy! My buff girl Bilbo (obviously) lays softies most of the time before a dozen or less thin shelled bobbely eggs and then goes broody...its a nightmare...she has access to shell all day and does take it..she is free range in a large garden but nothing I do improves things :wall: I have 6 other laying hens and no probs with them. No one seems to have an answer and I wondered it it is a breed issue

Not sure I'm afraid - Matilda was a great layer - probably an egg 5 days out of 7 from her; Florence (laced), wasn't bad either, probably 3 or 4 a week.

They were all decent sized, pale creamy-brown eggs with good shells - only had one softy out of the first flock, and never did work out who the cuplrit was.

Sorry...
