Flatmates - Joint bank account?

Recommended Posts

I would never have another joint account other than with OH. When I moved in with OH we had a friend renting with us and we had a joint account for bills, rent etc. Later when OH and I had moved out and bought a house of our own we got refused credit for a sofa from M&S. To cut a long story short it was because we had once been in the joint account with this person who was now in the poo with his bank and up to his eyes in debt; it came back and bit us hard as our credit rating was affected by him.

It was a long and very painful process to get him removed from any links to us on our credit rating.

There is the old saying about money and friends not mixing.

Ok, so we've set up Glide, most of us have done it, just waiting for a couple ... one of which is away (without internet) until 1st week in October!

Have said his parents need to do it or he needs to ring 'cos we can't not have internet 'til October!!!

We'll get there eventually ;)

Forgot I hadn't updated this, sorry!

Well, we'd all set up apart from 1 person (lead tenant) who agreed to do it, then the week before Freshers she told us all she wasn't happy with a direct debit 'cos "they can take hoever much money they want to" and pulled out

Instead we sorted it all separately but didn't set up a joint account... The landlord deals with the water and gas so we just pay an 8th of that to him, and then we give the girl who pulled out an 8th of the electricity bill and she goes to the bank and sorts it. Tbh its a bit of a faff but only a couple times a year and has worked so far.

The internet we tried to sort with Virgin Media and they still haven't installed!

Glad it is working out for you.

Its one thing your child going off to Uni,but another altogether when they have to go & find a house to live in!

Happily she has nice people she wants to share with - there will be 4 girls & 1 boy, & they all seem to have their heads screwed on,so that is something :D

That's a shame, a bit of a duff reason to pull out because there are direct debit agreements and rules in place that mean they won't take more than you owe. I would really recommend it because my OH is in shared accommodation and a girl left their house just before christmas and hasn't paid her share of the bills and won't answer calls or texts to chase the money up - which means they're going to end up having to pay her share. If they'd set up glide then the money owed would be her responsibility and if she defaulted it would be on her record without anyone else having to pay for her. I know a few people who have had this sort of issue when housemates leave or just don't budget for their bills. It's the best way to make sure you only pay what you're meant to! :)

I know, its scary!

Feels really old to have a house, have now bought a car, got a job and have the loan at the end of it

Hope it works out for them :D

We're a house of 8 (had a few probs and got the police involved  ) so 4 of us are staying and we're getting 4 new flatmates for next year, 2 already sorted and need to find 2 more, won't be a problem getting them though :)

For us the priority of halls is something like Freshers, Scholarships, then International + Masters ... then 3rd, then 2nd years so we've got the house.

Know it would be easier for lectures + the library but chances of getting halls, and the one we wanted was really low.

Some friends are moving back up to campus for the 3rd year but I love living in town, completely different experience! :D

My daughter lives in a shared Uni house. All bills are spilt 4 ways - two of the sharers are always late psying. She is the designated payer of the accounts so it's a pain when they are late as she pays them to avoid being cut off! On the plus side - she is already building up a good credit history, so when she goes into the big wide world of work, that will count for a good thing when anyone does a credit search on her!

My daughter has also offered to be the 'head housemate', the one who does all the admin & dealing with landlords.

She is great at this sort of stuff & I will be there to help her too of course.

The house she viewed today sounds great - 6 bedrooms ,2 bathrooms, all bills for £105 a week each, but it is a fair trek to the Uni so they are going to carry on looking for the moment.

Just a little word of caution - DD was in a house share with 3 others, and they had Virgin Media broadband installed, it was done in DD's name, 6 months in landlord has terminated their lettings contract as he wants to renovate house for London Olympics  so all occupants have had to move out, DD has moved home for a while :D Virgin Media have charged £190 to terminate broadband contract and DD has had to pay up  other occupants are not responding her her e-mails to pay their share!

The landlord should be paying it. Not the tenants. If he's made them cut short their tenancy.

When you set up any contracts for utilities, council tax (if relevant) and anything with shared responsibility make sure it goes into all names so that all are liable. Anyone who's name isn't on the account isn't liable (if the worst happens).

You can start as the best of friends and end up in a 'The Young Ones' (Rik Mayall/Ade Edmonson not Cliff Richard) scenario!
