Cissie - not well, big decision this pm or wait?

Recommended Posts

Advice please folks.

Yesterday afternoon I found Cissie had hurt her leg and obviously not eating and drinking as she could not get to the food and water. Looks like she did some damage by doing something on a perch as the perches in the house were all out of place. She was holding her leg up and can't put any weight on it. Got her comfy in a crate in the run and kept an eye on her. Oh and before I found her, the other two had got a bit of their own back on her (Cissie is top chook and can be a bully) with some feather pulling and pecking (no blood though).

This morning (being a Saturday and FRing day) I opened the crate and she hopped out in the garden had a bit to eat & drink and sat in the sun. Seem happy enough but still with a hurt leg. Then when I vacuuming (all of 15 mins), she hopped off and had taken herself to hide behind the run (where they never go). Some how she managed to get stuck as with her bad leg she could not get turned round to get out of the narrow space. I got her out and she seems to have just given up and her bum's gone mucky (never had a chook with a mucky bum before). I made her comfy again in a nice clean crate and she's sat on shredded paper with a pot of food and a bottle of water.

I was all set to call the vet when they open for their pm session for advice. TBH I thought it was going to be the what time and do you take Visa questions? But in the last 20 mins she's only gone and laid an egg. I reckon she was looking for a way to get in to nest box with out climbing/jumping up. She's sat in the crate I fixed her up in sat bolt upright, looking perky and alert.

So what to do? Call the vet for advice (bet they know nothing about chooks) and wait and see what happens over the next few days? Or make the PTS decision now so she does not suffer for a couple of days?

I am not going to have her treated - harsh, although they are pets, I cannot justify vets fees for treatment.

Any thoughts would be welcomed.

I'd keep her resting in a pet carrier or similar, in sight of her friends. She will want to keep up with them, so as not to lose her place in the pecking order, but this will only aggravate the injury.

I imagine that you have examined her thoroughly to make sure there are no obvious signs of a fracture.

If you can get hold of a calcium supplement, that might help.

Cissie is still perky this morning but she can't move at all. I think a day in her favourite spot in the garden with her favourite snacks is in order before a one way trip to the vets tomorrow. I might even sit her in the flower bed she's been pining for all summer - she can't do any damage.
