AlisonH
This is probably a really stupid question but do you cook corn on the cob before giving it to the chickens or is raw ok?
Olly
Raw is fine - it entertains them for quite a while, pecking the kernels off.
lindafw
mine just look at it and head off towards the layers pellets They free range all day so I expect flys and bugs and beetles along with seeds and grasses are more fun in their mind
peachachecha
I have tried both ways and my fussy three like the cooked much better. So, they will get cooked from now on - they don't have me wrapped tightly around their little feet do they? ;>)
Olly
Try s"Ooops, word censored!"ing a couple of kernels off the cob, and they'll soon get the hang of it. Last year I had several cobs - with permission from the farmer, I hasten to add! - from a maize field, and kept them in the garage to give out every so often. Even when they were quite dry and hard, the chooks still loved it.
debbietabby
Yes, I had to take some corn off the cob and offer it to mine before they worked out it was edible... Debbie
bouldercroft
I give them both! It's corn season here so I'm getting lots of kernels in my weekly crop share I always save the husks that I've eaten/shucked the corn off and give them to the girls - they pick them completely clean! If I have some gnarly old looking ears I wrap them in cling wrap, throw them in the freezer and save them for the winter when corn is expensive and the girls are in need of a calorific treat
kinsk
If it's our leftovers they get it cooked, if it's one past it's best that I've found lurking in the bottom of the fridge they get it raw
AlisonH
Thanks for all your replies and advice - I've just bought some so I'll see what they think!

Mrs Webmuppet
I give mine raw corn on the cob ............I have to throw it from a save distance otherwise I get mugged...........doesn't last long either
jennym
Mine would bowl me over to get to it no matter how it was prepared. I just cut a chunk off the raw cob and throw it down, standing well back... I used to buy small cheap cans when it wasn't in season - that was particularly useful at the beginning when I was trying to convince them I was not a chicken-eating monster. They don't get it so often now but they still recognize corn, in any form
hammy72
Mine have had one this morning, left over from my tea last night, I expected them to peck bits off but I can't find it in their run now. Would they have really eaten the whole thing?
