Cat wee problem

Recommended Posts

I am probably asking the impossible but I know Omlet folk have such a wealth of knowledge someone must have a good tip.

We have 4 cats, Thomas the wise old man about 10, FiFi and Bonkers who are rescued brother and sister about two years old and Inca the Posh baby just over a year. They all have free access to outside through a cat flap. Thomas was the first to accept Inca and slowly the other two did although fifi was quite resistant and Bonkers just stayed away for quite some time. They finally all seemed to settle with nothing more than the odd spat.

However more recently FiFi seems unhappy and skulks around to the point I did wonder if she would be better rehomed as a single cat. I discussed it with the vet who said it was unusual to just happen and that it probably coincided with Inca coming into season and being neutered. Maybe it just upset hormones. This has been going on for a good few months now, she seems distinctly solo and not really part of the house or the other cats. Her and Inca have more than their fair share of spats

It has been bought to a head now as I keep smelling cat wee and have finally realised that someone is spraying up the wall in the utility room and downstairs loo -the cat flap is in this area. (all our cats are neutered) We have not managed to see one of them do it. I suspect Fifi but don't know if its her or someone else upset? Any suggestions on a way forward

Have you tried a Feliway plug in?? I use these when my lot are too distressed... I have two girls that dont like the others sometimes and will wee and spray. It gives out "happy" cat pheramones which helps keep them calm so they stop. They get bullied sometimes by the others :( .

Its worth giving it a go in areas where they are normally, and you can get collars as well which travel with your cats and so helps them to relax. They have worked well when I have used them :)

I would go for a Feliway Diffuser too, or there is a new essential oil diffuser called Pet Remedy. Sadly the pheromone collars have too discontinued (they were very good). Also make sure that you clean the area well and with nothing that is itself strong smelling. Simple Solution is the best thing for this but there are any number of pet stain/urine removers out there. Strong smelling cleaners can encourage a cat to spray over it.

Thank you that's very helpful. WHere do you get such products , does it have Jo be from a vet and are they quite expensive?

I have thoroughly cleaned the whole area with biological washing powder solution as I remember this is what the rescue centre recommended when we got the cats.

We got a diffuser for around £16 online, it does work, it's run out recently and Jelly has started acting a bit meeker and clingier than he usually is, so I will have to buy a refill. The cheapest I've found those is around a tenner. It's supposed to last a month but I found ours ran out a bit quicker than that.

I would recommend it, as my cat got a urinary infection from being distressed and not going outside to wee as he was nervous of the chickens. Which resulted in an out of hours vet visit and £170 bill for antibiotics and metacam. £10 a month is a better investment, I think!

It will run out more quickly if the doors or windows are open or if there is a lot of 'traffic' going past the diffuser

Ours is in the downstairs hallway at the foot of the stairs (so it gets the kitchen, hallway, landing, stairs, etc, biggest open area of the house), so that would explain it!

I'm also a Feliway fan and can always tell when it's run out as Pud and Tozi start to argue. Cheapest place I found was Amazon and it's always worth searching on the internet as prices vary a lot. It also comes as a travel spray, so you could spray it on Fifi's favourite bed to keep her happy and feeling secure.

My Cleo went through a phase of soiling the bedroom carpet when Tozi moved in and a combination of feliway and lots of cuddles and praise for being a "good" girl won through in the end. Cleo's such a cuddle-grub though, she'd stand on her head if she thought she'd get praise and a hug for it :D !

Good luck with Fifi, hope she settles soon  .
