All happening today....

Recommended Posts

While gardening and enjoying the lovely sun in the garden today I decided to clean out the eglu. I found Lola eating a soft shelled egg which was in the nest box. She was really determined to eat it and I had a terrible job trying to push her away to remove the egg. While this was happening I heard Layla. She was pecking ferociously at a dead mouse :vom: I do not know whether she killed it or found it  Lola being alerted to the delight rushed over. Poor Layla was in such a rush to try to swallow it whole that she nearly choked and gave a sort of crowing noise before coughing it up. There then followed a Benny Hill style chase round the summer house, led by Layla with the mouse dangling from her beak, Lola intent on getting the mouse and me also trying to get the mouse to put it in the bin....I eventually won.....I hope the neighbours weren't watching

My girls had a tug of war over a mouse a few weeks ago. PP Clover had it at first ..then war broke out..a couple of minutes of mayhem. GNR Florry grabbed it from her and hid behind the coup with it in the end ,she always does that with something she does not want the others to see . I don't know why she thinks she is in hiding

The pity was the mouse was not to be seen again and it could not have ecaped.

I seem to have vegetarian hens. They wont eat - slugs, snails, caterpillars, worms etc .... and seem to run a mile from anything that moves ! They go MAD for raspberries though :)

The girls turn their beaks up at slugs too but will eat worms and they now appear to be looking up the food chain to small mammals  I do wonder if the poor thing was alive when they found it. I have seen a mouse going into the grub for pellets so maybe it was a revenge attack
