Henergy
This will be my first Autumn / Winter with chickens & I'm wondering if muddy eggs is par for the course during damp days ? Its a shame as they normally look so lovely Is there any other things I will notice due to the changing seasons ? I have already changed from Aubiose in the cube trays to newspaper. As it is getting breezier, I found that when I emptied the trays the Aubiose flew all over the garden.
Olly
Muddy eggs aren't usually a problem, ideally your run won't be too muddy if you have some sort of cover over it and aubiose or similar on the floor. Expect a lot more poo, as they spend more time in the coop during the longer nights. The main problems with winter are not the cold, as chickens don't generally mind this, but damp and wind which is liable to shred tarpaulins or other soft covers. In very cold weather it can be difficult to keep their water from freezing. Your hens will be fine though, and it's great seeing chickens in the snow! Expect a lot more poo, ! I do let them freerange whatever the weather so there is a fair bit of muddy feet at our place !! I cleaned them out last night & now the cube trays are full of poo again - I wonder how much there would be with the full complement of 10 hens sleeping in there
