Free ranging whilst worming - Why not?

Recommended Posts

I read on this forum that many of you reluctantly keep your girls penned in for a week when worming. I really cannot do this as my set-up keeps them locked in a stable or out freeranging. I cannot lock them in the stable for a week, so I have mixed the flubenvet in with their favourite Garvo Alfamix and they are wolfing it down.....before toddling off to dustbathe or gather in their favourite gossiping spot under the rhodedendrons.... ( I normally mix the Alfamix in with a bag of pellets for economy - but for this week they are having it complete, to encourage them to take the full dose of Flubenvet.) I did not read anything on the Flubenvet leaflet about needing to keep them enclosed so why do people feel the need to do it? I don't intend to give them any treats - just 100% Alfamix laced with Flubenvet......do you think this will be ok? :eh:

That's right, all food eaten for the seven days should, strictly speaking, should be 'flubenvetted'. When they are free ranging, they are eating all sorts of fleas, flies, bugs, beetles and slugs and worms which are not treated, and which will crowd out the pellets and give the internal parasites a breather.

Thanks Egluntyne, but do you think that I have done as best as I can to fill them up with their food of choice? They really were stuffing their beaks this morning with the Alfamix so hopefully they will not need to supplement too much.... and the thought of shutting them in a dark stable for the whole week is unbearable!

I always let mine have a bit of a play out whilst they are on Flubenvet. So long as they get most of their food treated, and eat it throughout the course of the day, rather than in one go, as with the grape method, I dare say you could reasonably assume that they have had enough Flubenvet.
