AJuff
At breakfast this morning OHs cycling weekly was on the table, on the front a fit looking lady with the headline 3 kids and still winning. I bet she hasn't got a full time job I commented. OH thought I was being sarcastic but I wasn't. I read on in envious horror at her training schedule! She doesn't have a full time job, she's a full time mum! I have 3 kids and a full-time job and I couldn't do her fitness schedule, no time and I'm knackered after a full teaching day. OH went on to remind me I could get up an hour and a half earlier to cycle if I really wanted to! After two late parent consultations this week I barely have the energy to eat let alone the inclination to keep fit. So I am left feeling a bit aggrieved as I used to cycle lots before children, less and less as each successive child came along and not at all when I started work full time! Grrrr . . . Green eyes . .
Looney
I bet you that she misses out on certain other things in her life or has to make sacrifices to fit in her cycling. Something always has to give, it is just a question of what her/your priorities are and balancing them and what works for one definitely doesn't work for another. I was commenting to OH the other day that I would like to do something for 'me'. He looked a bit taken aback and then slightly horrified as if it was dawning on him that that might mean less time for him and the children! He did understand though once I explained. It'll never happen though! I have no time for exercise. Ho hum!

Ziggy
This is always going to be a big thing for mums, isn't it... I get a bit green eyed occasionally, and at other times I even get a bit nasty behind the back of super cool fit mums, then I remind myself that we all have a different life, and hopefully all have some motivation and aims in what we do... I have four kids, and swore I would be back to my pre-kid size by the time my last daughter was two... well guess what, she is five now and I am two stones overweight... but hey, the super fit mums only have two kids, and no job, and have the time on their hands to be fit, so why should I criticise them, after all being fit isn't a bad goal... My life is what I make of it, and my being overweight is due to my eating and drinking habits, and not their fault... yes I get cranky when people who have no job, but have nannies, and cooks, make it look easy... but then I met some mums like that, and the time they have does get filled up with other things, not just fitness, and their life isn't all five star as I think... and if they make fitness a full time thing, then it's their choice, and a bit like a job anyway... I believe we need to think our own life and health is our responsibility, and nothing to do with others, no matter who they are, and what they do. Just because someone else is taking time to be fit, doesn't mean it's an excuse for us to not do our best, even if what we'd do is nothing compared to what they set themselves as goals. That's them. Good for them. Now for me, and what is right for me.

AJuff
Fortunately for me my work is on my doorstep! 71/2 minutes from door to door!!!! Not worth getting the bike out . . i walk.
patsylabrador
In her defence as I also didn't go back to work after having the kids, she probably just needed a challenge outside the house. Apart from anything else if you say you're a housewife people often treat you like a dummy. It's good to be able to say that you have this or that in your life. Mercedes55
Think I'd tell him where to put the bike Totally agree My son is now all grown up and I am a grandparent. I don't work outside of the home, nor do I want to. I wouldn't want to spend hours every day getting fit like that woman as I don't like the sound of all that cycling. The most I do every day is 20mins power walking on the treadmill and housework. I still weigh the same as when I was 17, which is 7st 2lbs but I'm sure I'm nowhere as fit as a lot of other people the same age as me. I know exercise is good for us, hence the treadmill, but I really don't have the energy to do more
AJuff
Blimey! i don't think I can remember being 7st 2!!!!!! I'd have people asking me if I was eating at that weight!!!! Off for a nice walk across to Hadrian's wall, cold but lovely and sunny. Not to mention I feel fat and unfit today . . . .
Guest
Well I changed my life a few years back - I had a clear out of everything that was making me unhappy - startting with my husband! Once all the junk was gone - I found myself a job I love, got my long awaited allotment and CHICKENS!!!!! Then a year or so later I started running in the mornings, and swimming 2-3 times a week. I swim somedays for over an hour and others for barely 30 minutes - but I feel so much better for fitting it in. I only have my son at home now, and work part-time - but still have to juggle time. But the time I make for me makes me a better me - all round! Being a wife/mother/emplyoyee or whatever makes it harder for you to be you! But if you take a long look at your life and your loved ones - you will see that they have time to do "stuff" because you do so much of the running around after them all the time. So sit down together and lay down some new ground rules - you need time to do "stuff" too - so they can either take over some jobs at home that are left to you so that you have some spare time or the jobs gets left undone - be it washing/ironing/cleaning/shopping or whatever! This is 2011 - bras have been burnt for us ladies! and yet we still do the lions share of the chores! If going for a run/swim/jog/walk/dig/ride/talking to chickens! etc would make you a happier bunny - then grab it with both hands!
The Dogmother
I think it's a case of being happy with what you Do have, rather than being envious of what others have/do. It's such a waste of energy otherwise. I used to be uber-fit, but a combination of being nearly 50, a single parent and working full time mean that I'm not nearly as fit as I'd like to be, but I've reached a happy compromise and am probably fitter than a lot of women my age, so I'm happy enough and don't sweat the small stuff.
