Droopy Tail

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've tried searching online for information but can't find anything that really seems to fit. My hen Mrs Abercrombie came out this morning with her back curved and her tail down, but the other two girls seem fine. She seems a little unsteady on her feet (she seemed to trip and fall a couple of times) but she is reasonably perky, her eyes are clear and she is interested in corn and keen to get out for a walk but she doesn't seem quite at robust as usual. I have tried to see if she is egg bound but I can't feel anything that is obviously an egg. She hasn't laid for a few days but neither has one of my other hens, only one is still laying regularly. I had just assumed this was because it is cold and dark at the moment as it happened once before, all three stopped laying for a couple of weeks then restarted. I have also noticed that none of my girls seem to have eaten much of their feed in the past week (I feed them the Omlet feed) but they are all still very enthusiastic about mixed corn. I'm fairly sure she isn't broody as she has been once before and this seems completely different.

Any advice would be gratefully received, I wonder if I should isolate her and bring her inside to keep her warm?

Thank-you

I've had a feel and another look, her vent is clear but her abdomen is very warm, it feels soft but not swollen I don't think? I've brought her inside and put a bowl of hot water underneath her (not boiling, but steamy) to see if it helps. She seems reasonably content with the arrangement and has sat herself down....

How is she now? This happened to my little one at Christmas and she popped out 3 eggs in succession last week. However she has gone downhill since then and it's her feet i am mostly worried about. Get it checked out to avoid the sadness of loosing her.

My vet said drooped tail can mean a number of things but covers pain. So egg pound, pts, even a poorly belly...its a question of ruling things out.

We took her to the vet who has prescribed Flubenvet. All three of my birds seem a bit too thin although the other two seem perky enough. Only one is currently laying and none of them are eating their Omlet feed although they love their corn. I am concentrating this week on getting the flubenvet down them and trying to fatten them up a bit. I have mixed the flubenvet with their corn as they won't eat the pellets and I'm adding freshly cooked frozen peas and sweetcorn and grapes, which they are scoffing. Next week I think I will have to try to get them back onto their feed by withholding the corn? Her tail is still firmly tucked under but she is back outside with the other two and she is active and eating, so I am watching and waiting. I am fairly certain that her feet are fine. Hopefully if I can get rid of the worms she will start feeling better.

Thank-you for asking after her!

Jess
